Gophers coaches, major donors and alumni told the committee that the new AD should have these attributes: disdain for mediocrity; strong communicator; skilled negotiator; strong fund-raiser (especially in the business community); a competitor; willingness to interact with business leaders, former athletes and other alumni; and, ideally, a former "M" letter winner.

ideally, a former "M" letter winner

This should have absolutely no bearing in the process. And furthermore, even if it should, anyone who is young enough to actually be the AD would be associated with nothing but a culture of losing as a player. Man, I really, really hate the parochialism prevalent in Minnesota.

I don't care if he comes from Alaska. As long as he gets the job done.

I like the disdain for mediocrity.

We have been great at winning national championships in all sorts of competitions under Maturi.

Except not really. Even the non-revenue sports have been a bit blah nationally.

Dance line is good.

As long as it is a tubby smith type hire.

Master of the obvious here, but what you're getting from that group is pretty much a list of all the things they feel Maturi wasn't. Interesting to me are the "strong communicator" and "willingness to interact" parts.

The candidate should not be over-rated because he or she is an M winner. Nor be over-rated because not. While some here feel we're parochial, my sense is that we assume people and products from outside are inherently superior.
One qualification I'd add to the list -- candidate must have successfully run an athletic department in a market in which his or her school was not the premier attraction.

I'm glad we framed the goals of the new AD in such lofty terms as national championships. If the standards were just outperforming the old AD, it would be a pretty low bar.

What a bizarre recommendation. It does not focus on results, but the environment of where the results occurred.

I wonder if they have to be babysat 24/7?

What a crass and insensitive comment. Try doing what they do once. I'll bring the oxygen for you, unless maybe you need a gurney. You are one of the reasons why so many women think all men are troglodytes. Some of you may think it's cool to put down women athletes but with that kind of attitude I doubt you are getting any nor will you be anytime in the future. Sorry to be so negative but this is the kind of stuff that gives men a bad name. I will not sit idly by and allow someone to make such an ignorant statement without saying something.

You don't keep up with the basketball team much do you? This had nothing to do with the fact that it was danceline or they are women. Tubby mentioned how he isn't watching the players all the time leading to some of the lack of success. (didn't say that explicitly, but you could get it out of what he was saying) so Howie was referencing that.

Talk is cheap. Let's see who he hires and how the Culture change that is required to create this wining environment will be implemented. Kill talks a lot about Culture change needed in football. The whole AD department needs an overhaul similar to what WISKY did in the early 90's. It only took them a couple years to start to be competitive and another decade before their whole major sport athletic program received national recognition and notoriety. We need to be patient of course, but the NEW AD will be one of the most critical hires the new President makes.

The AD should come from outside if you ask me. I am hearing John Anderson is a favorite of many. Can't see it. We need fresh blood. New thinking. Outside thinking. I like John but we need an administrator, not a coach.
