Since the turn of the century, the Gophers have appeared in 3 (of the 12) NCAA Tournaments. How many non-BCS programs have more NCAA appearances than the Gophers since 2000?

A. 23
B. 28
C. 31
D. 36
E. 40

Brownie points for naming any of the 12 non-BCS programs that have appeared in at least 6 of those NCAAs.

Gonzaga, Utah State, Butler, Xavier,.......
 

Well done Ray. Those are 4 of the 12. ... Gonzaga (leads with 12), Xavier (10), Butler (8) and Utah State (8).

We still have 8 to go. A guess on the trivia question, as well?

Not a stupid guess, as Temple has earned 6 NCAA appearances. You & Josh were able to name 7 of the 12 non-BCSers with at least 6 appearances since 2000.

The answer to the trivia question is D (36). Congrats Josh.

Winthrop (8), Creighton (6), Penn (6), Southern Illinois (6), Utah (6, though Utes will be BCS beginning next season), as well as

Northern Iowa (5), UNLV (5), Western Kentucky (5), Alabama State (4), Belmont (4), Charlotte (4), Davidson (4), Dayton (4), East Tennessee State (4), George Mason (4), Hampton (4), Holy Cross (4), Kent State (4), Montana (4), Murray State (4), Nevada (4), NC-Wilmington (4), ODU (4), Saint Joseph's (4), San Diego State (4), Siena (4), UAB (4), Vermont (4) and VCU (4).
 




Interesting stuff - makes it more understandable that certain coaches at certain powerhouse mid-major schools would happily stay put and continue to be a big fish in a small pond rather than try to build something at a mediocre major conference school.
 

There are some interesting nuggets to dig out of some of this stuff. This goes in line with what you're saying. ... how is it possible that during this time frame Butler has as many Final Four appearances as traditional powerhouses Indiana and Kentucky (1 apiece) combined, as well as more appearances in the title game (2 to 1)?

Or this one. Over the last 12 seasons the Colonial has sent the same number of programs to the Final Four (George Mason & VCU) as the Pac 10 (Arizona & UCLA).

Or one more. Non-BCS programs have accounted for 3 of the last 8 Final Four spots (Butler x 2 + VCU), as well as 3 of the last 4 (Butler x 2 + Memphis) national runners-up.

All the more reason I'm getty itchy for the Gopher program to make some kind of run in the NCAA. 1997 seems like 50 years ago. We're certainly due.
