Per St. Paul Pioneer Press:

University of Minnesota interim athletics director Beth Goetz announced Thursday at a Board of Regents meeting that the school's track teams will have a new home, and that an additional $5 million has been raised for the Athletes Village project.

Goetz, accompanied for her presentation by associate AD Dan O'Brien, said the men's and women's track teams are expected to have a new home on the East Bank of campus as part of the master facilities plan.

That's great news, right, as I believe the track issue was the hold up on the Athletes Village...?

Hold on everyone. We still have to find room for a soccer stadium on campus and of course a new 18 hole golf course between the Bank and Mariucci.

Hopefully the Mississippi River is close enough to campus for the rowers or it could get tricky.

Let me guess - Lot 37 & Lot 33 will go away to the new track and field.

Schematic-wise and distance from the new Athletic Village will make this the logical site.

Look for the U to go vertical to add more parking spaces to make up for the loss while minimizing loss of tailgating spaces.

I know having it in 37 & 33 is just speculation, buT if we loose all of these tailgate spots I am not sure there would be a reason the keep season tickets.

Hopefully the track team doesn't mind that the new track is actually going to be dug underneath the Mississippi and we're ignoring the leaking concerns...

Just get this done already and don't make Jerry regret staying.

wonder when the new schematics will come out? also saw a tweet today and one of Regents told Marcus (IIRC) that they think they have enough votes to break ground.

People need to get used to the idea that tailgating will eventually be non-existent in the lots surrounding the stadium as more buildings replace them. With the land constraints the U is facing they will be taken for academic or other building uses, surface lots are a poor utilization of the land. Tailgating is not the future of pregame partying, the beer garden/bar scene is.

Why?

Go to Sally's, Stub & Herbs, BWW, McNamara Plaza, Block G, Goal Line Club, etc.

There are plenty of ways to do pre-game without tailgating.

Bingo or just ride the bus from St. Paul and tailgate there.

There are pluses and minuses to having an urban campus. In the middle of BFE Iowa you can have as many parking lots as you want. Not as easy for the U.

BFE= Best for Everyone?:p

Working in Real Estate Lending, BFE = Basel Flood Elevation (but I don't think howeda7 had that in mind).

I learn a lot reading GH. I had to look that one up.

Iowa actual has a very urban stadium and most people tailgate in the yards of houses near the stadium. Have never tailgated with a car in Iowa City and have never had an issue tailgating
