As best I recollect there was never a good shot of the stands where most folks were sitting. Clearly an artifact of using a baseball stadium for the game and just where ESPN placed their cameras.

We already knew the Lobos would travel well and apparently did so. How many Gophers showed up? Google says the 4,000 ticket allotment to the University was sold out, which is great.

Also, looked like The Band was able to get the funds they needed to travel. Could certainly hear them at times, plus the M-I-N-N-E-S-O-T-A chant when we did score.

So, how did we do on the butts-in-the-seat look for the 2025 Rate Bowl?

They showed a lot more crowd shots of the New Mexico fans, by a large margin.

Doesn't mean there were more of them there, but ESPN was far more focused on them at key moments.

I remember two shots in particular. One was a large shot of Lobo fans. The other one was a small shot featuring Gopher fans with perhaps about 3-500 people sitting together. I couldn't get a feel as to the overall turnout of Gopher fans at the stadium by watching the game from a tv.

There was no panorama shot for this one. Really an issue of camera placement and of course there was no blimp or aerial look either.

As an aside, noticed a small plane circling overhead for one of the home games and wondered about security issues. Of course later realized when rewatching the game on TV that the plane was doing aerial shots as part of the broadcast. Doh!

I would say there were 4-5K of us there, we showed out in a respectable way. But Lobos fans outnumbered us by at least 2-to-1 if not more and their energy and enthusiasm was 5-to-1 compared to Gophers. Their sideline was the same, our sideline body language and energy was nothing compared to theirs. But we got the W!

Their fans were great to talk to. This game was a big deal to them, playing a bowl outside of the New Mexico Bowl, playing a Big Ten team, etc. They love their Lobos and are very proud to talk about what they love about living in New Mexico, as they should be and as we often are about Minnesota.

I had two fans tell me they’ll hook me up with Lobos basketball tickets at The Pit! We talked Richard Pitino and our mutual affection for his dry sense of humor, and their fans were so excited when I shared my wife and I recently booked hotel room for October for the Annual Hot Air Balloon Festival they are famous for.

Fun to interact with a fan base we normally don’t get to. And fun to get the W.

Go Gophers!!

Great report Bleed. Engaging the other team's fans is a part of going to a bowl game the Billds really enjoy.

I'd guesstimate 3-1 ratio favoring Lobo fans.
Also, sitting in the lower deck end zone, same side as the band, we couldn't hear either band very well.

The baseball stadium is unique, but just doesn't lend itself to good sightlines IMO.

UNM fans around me were really friendly and thrilled to be there.

Very nice piece. But I'm surprised you would share personal information.

New Mexico as a program has come completely full circle.

Founded the WAC in 1962 with Wyoming, Utah/BYU, and Arizona/AZ State.
Founded the Mountain West with seven other break away schools from what the WAC had become (bloated to 16 members, unheard of at the time, with Texas schools).

And now being left behind (along with Wyoming) by the schools forming the new PAC.

Definitely more Hobo fans than us.

I was shocked to see how many Hobos were there behind our bench (Field 5 - bleachers - 50 yard line). I was surrounded by them Hobos.

Our MINNESOTA chant was so definitely weak.

I miss our home announcer with the “that’s a Minnesota Gopher first down” after all of our first downs and “rah” at the end of our MINNESOTA chants.

All Hobo fans were cool.
