Goodson is the second Director of Basketball Operations to leave the staff in two months.

Per Marcus:

Gophers director of basketball operations Steve Goodson will leave the program for a coaching position elsewhere, according a team spokesman.

Goodson, who worked as a special assistant to the head coach under Tubby Smith at Kentucky and then at the University of Minnesota, was rehired last month by Smith's replacement, Richard Pitino.

Pitino is expected to promote assistant director of basketball Josh Adel to replace Goodson. The transition will take place in the next week or two, according to a person with direct knowledge of the situation.

Well it certainly looks like they promoted the 22 year old biology major/head student manager from Florida.
This is a head shaker.

If I recall the head coach's resume, he was a student manager as well. This is a position that does all the important but annoying little details that make a program go. Probably needs no basketball knowledge at all to do well, but used as a stepping stone into coaching. If he can take care of the details, he can do the job whether he is 22 or 45, no matter what his major was.

SERIOUSLY? Have you looked at the experience and qualifications of other D1 DOB's? And as much as so many like to bash Tubby and staff on here- most are happy to point out it was Esposito's connections, expertise AND EXPERIENCE that put together the Gopher's bangin' schedule last year.

Yes, SERIOUSLY. The DOBO is not a coaching position. The DOBO isn't even allowed on the floor in practice. His main job is to schedule games, plan travel, plan meals, organize summer camps, help with recruiting visits, set and discuss budgets with department heads, practice schedules, etc.

And, since you asked, here's a look at the other DOBOs in the Big Ten:

Illinois - Mark Morris (student manager at Murray State until 2010 - 25 yrs old)
Indiana - Jayd Grossman (former trainer, with no previous coaching experience - 42 yrs old)
Iowa - currently unfilled position
Maryland - Justin Clark (former student manager at Texas A&M, got job at 25 yrs old at Tex A&M)
Michigan - Travis Conlan (no prior coaching experience, former player who just returned from playing career overseas)
Michigan State - Kevin Pauga (former MSU student manager, no previous coaching experience, was a data analyst for Big Ten)
Northwestern - Chris Lautin (former Duke student manager, work at NBA-D League office as stat guy - 27 yrs old)
Nebraska - Jayden Olson (former D-III player, 33 yrs old)

No one said a DBO needed coaching experience- how about just plain life experience? And you might make note that this list doesn't include any 22 years old who have head coaches in just their second year as a head coach.

Also- I'd like to point out that Luke Wainwright was an varsity football assistant coach for his high school alma mater for six years- probably didn't do that AND manage the UW men's basketball team- as the two overlap in the fall- so unless he was a 16 year old high school coach- maybe he was a wee bit older than 22 when he graduated from UW in 2009 and took on the DBO job?

I thought that Adel was a major reach for the position, but maybe he's not. I did feel more comfortable with the resumes of the guys at Purdue, Indiana, and Michigan State which were the 3 schools I looked up before reading your post. Thanks for doing all the legwork on this as it does seem like Esposito (and Balado (sp?) who Pitino orginally hired) were more of outliers than part of the norm for who usually takes an ops job.

Chaney's title is DOBO, but his responsibilities are more in line with player development, life skills development, etc.

Grossman does the traditional DOBO duties for IU, such as travel schedule, budgets, administrative details, meal planning, etc.

And, neither guy coaches.

Well, as a matter of fact, Wainwright began his volunteer high school football coaching career as a college freshman. He did overlap the basketball managing and the football coaching.

Wainwright is 2004 high school grad, a 2009 college grad, and is currently 27 years old. He had student-managing and video experience when hired as DOBO at UW.
