per Marcus:

But would it really be different if an up-and-coming coach took Smith's place?

"Probably not," ESPN recruiting expert Dave Telep said, even if that coach were Virginia Commonwealth's Shaka Smart.

Telep said Apple Valley's Tyus Jones, Cooper's Rashad Vaughn or De La Salle's Reid Travis -- the "Big Three" of Minnesota's high school recruits -- might at least consider playing for Smart or another candidate such as Marquette's Buzz Williams, Alabama's Anthony Grant or Florida Gulf Coast's Andy Enfield.

"But," he quickly added, "you're behind the eight ball."

"There's going to be some bounce in momentum with the next new hire, especially if it's someone that's on this initial list of candidates," Telep said. "Those guys have been entrenched in the recruiting process with a number of high-level schools for the better part of two years. It would be a big upset for a coach to be able to come in and lay the foundation for that relationship that quickly."

Blah, blah, blah. He may ultimately be right, but it depends upon how motivated they are to stay close to home.

Best case scenario: Fab Five type pact among them which can only happen with a coach with the right style of play

They ultimately have the ability to single-handidly re-write the story of Minnesota basketball. Can't say that they should take that risk vis-a-vis NBA aspirations, but they have the opportunity to potentially be idolized in MN for life.

If they did the re-write, trust me they could also fulfill their NBA aspirations.

I prefer to hear the opinion of others on this board and haven't been too vocal but I have posted on this subject before and what is said in this article is exactly what I fear. I don't disagree with the firing of Tubby but I've felt doing it hurts our chances of landing any of the big 3 no matter who is hired as his successor. I hope I'm wrong and the new coach is able to land at least any/all of them but considering their other options it will be easy for them to simply write us off. I haven't gotten any indication that staying home is a huge priority to any of them so I feel it will take a huge recruiting effort for a new coach to come in and beat the competition.

Rene Pulley chimes in:

"I like Tubby as a person, so naturally I'm going to miss him," Pulley said. "But as far as the recruiting of the kids, honestly I can't say whether it's going to affect them one way or another because none of the kids have really expressed where they're going -- they've been very close-mouthed. All they've done is had a few unofficial visits.

"You don't know what Tubby's relationship was with the three kids. And we don't know who the coach coming in will be. That will have a lot to do with the kids wanting to come (to Minnesota). Until we know that, I think that will be an unanswered question.

"It's almost like two questions -- does the firing of Tubby mean a better chance of getting those kids? That we won't know until we get the new person in here."

I'm calling B.S. he knows exactly where Tyus is headed.

I totally disagree that a new coach coming in would have no shot at the Big 3. But there are probably only two names on the list that would have a realistic shot at landing 1 or more of them. No surprise those names are Shaka and Flip. If the Big 3 are excited about the coach that gets hired the lack of an extended recruiting period won't matter one bit. These guys are planning to spend 1 or 2 years at the school they pick so they will go play for a coach that plays a style of basketball they feel will showcase them and get them to the next level....all this relationship crap is just filler because let's face it the schools want to use them and they want to use the schools neither side cares about a long term relationship.
