"When DeAndre Mathieu and Malik Smith arrived at the University of Minnesota this season, it wasn't clear just how they would fit in with returning backcourt starters Andre Hollins and Austin Hollins.

First-year Gophers coach Richard Pitino recruited Mathieu and Smith because he considered them to be mature and ready to play right away.

Pitino was hoping his newcomers would challenge the Hollinses and fall into leadership roles, giving the team four talented guards instead of just two.

With one game left before Big Ten play, Pitino saw the potential of that four-guard attack Friday night as the quartet combined for 74 points in a 92-79 win over Nebraska-Omaha in front of 11,890 at Williams Arena."
