Kirk Ciarrocca relayed a message soon after Antoine Winfield Jr.'s 76-yard punt return touchdown in the Gophers' season opener last week.

For those Minnesota coaches listening in on their headsets, the U's offensive coordinator said: "I told you he'd be a great player on offense."

While the electrifying run came in Winfield's debut as a punt returner, his display of game-breaking ability has the Gophers wondering what else the heralded safety could do for the U this season, especially on offense.

"It's a real thing," Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck said. "I just don't know when we will get to that. ... You can't just take somebody over there and teach them everything there is about wide receiver or running back, but I think there are some opportunities down the road, if we get in a certain position to do that. I just think he's such a special athlete."
