Gophers 85th in CFN initial rankings

And what part of our 3-9 season combined with a super hard schedule and new coaching staff deserves a higher ranking than this???

I think the team has a good shot at surprising people, but anyone ranking the Gophers low isn't disrespecting them. They're making an early prediction that is in line with the facts as of today.

In the immortal words of the Emperor from Star Wars.

Everything that has transpired has done so according to my design. Your friends, up there on the sanctuary moon, are walking into a trap, as is your Rebel fleet. It was *I* who allowed the Alliance to know the location of the shield generator. It is quite safe from your pitiful little band. An entire legion of my best troops awaits them. Oh, I'm afraid the deflector shield will be quite operational when your friends arrive.

Seriously though, I'm happy with low expectations for next year. It gives us a chance to exceed expectations, as well as a chance to catch teams napping.

This reminds me of the "no respect" card that was played all last summer. The team then went out and produced results that were right on par with what the national publications were saying. Most national publications were predicting the team would go 2-10 with one Big 10 victory. Others suggested 3-9 and very, very few predicted anything better than that. Not exactly a swing and a miss. I've learned my lesson. I am done with the no respect card. I'll be very happy if the team beats expecations

To be honest, 85th is higher than I expected by about 5-10 spots. Looks like they're up on the Gophers this year!

Respect has to be earned. To be quite honest, 85th is about what this team deserves to be "ranked." That should improve in upcoming years, but a 3-9 team, new coach or no, can hardly be expected to be world-beaters.

I'm not saying the Gophs won't do better - I'm saying this is what they deserve, based on what we know RIGHT NOW.

Actually, we beat expectations last season. We weren't expected to win any Big Ten games and finish last in the conference. Instead, we chose to lose to a MAC team and SDSU

Saw this earlier today...

...and didn't do the posting.

Seems about right all things considered.

Here's to a much higher CFN Final 2011 Rankings a year from now!

Go Gophers!

You are never allowed to make fun of PantherHawk.

5 State Ratings

No respect.

But, we're not last in the 5 state rating. That goes as follows:

1) Wisconsin....okay, Becky made the Rose Bowl.
2) South Dakota....the 'Yotes beat our Gophers
3) North Dakota....tough to prove, but the Bison beat us the last time we played.
4) Minnesota........we're movin' on up.
5) Iowa...............Floyd Who?

Every once in a while those national publications are way off base, but they had a pretty good handle what we were up against last year. This might be one of those times when they are off base because a new coach could really make a difference, particularly if there is some talent there. This year though, a new coach will be bringing in new scemes (yet again!!) new recruits and a whole different approach that will take a while to get used to but we will almost be guaranteed to have continuity going for us after that.

It usually takes a while to adapt to a new system like that and we will most likely struggle as we break in new schemes, a new coaching staff as well as a new QB. Nobody is expecting to win the Rose Bowl next year but I think we will see the team moving forward as the year progresses. I expect the team to get better and more fundamentally sound as the season goes on. I think we will see fewer stupid penalties and I also expect us to find and build our identity on both offense and defense. This all takes some time but these are all important building blocks to becoming successful. It is an exciting time even if the record might not be as good as we would want it to be.

Yes, we will probably stumble - especially early on (SC in the Coliseum?). But 85th? Maybe I'm being ruined by reading "The Minnesota Football Vault" scrapbook history - so many golden ages there. Great Christmas gift.
