Gophers 31, SEC Auburn 24

True story Talon.

Had to stand in line about 10 minutes to get a porta-potty while tailgating before the game. Started a conversation with a Tiger fan next to me to pass the time.

Shared the normal stuff and of course mentioned how we did not have a "strong" schedule according to most. While going over the non-conference foes mentioned the Fresno State and SDSU (he said the Jackrabbits, right?) and the GSU Eagles...and THAT caught his attention.

Quoteth the Tiger: "Georgia Southern that's a good program." Of course I had to explain we won literally at the end of the game but we were the better for it.

For what it's worth our stock rose with that one Auburn fan because of us playing you. I think our on-field performance did its part too. Good luck to the Eagles in 2020.

No chance that Auburn Fan thought GSU was as good as GH did.

For all I know his nephew was the kicker for GSU. Just a pre-game porta-potty discussion before kickoff.

Now for all other Auburn fans no comment.

Of course those young Auburn fabs dont remember that GSC was beating them 17-0 at half time in the early 90s. They were able to sub their receivers, and backs a lot and beat us 35-17.

The same thing happend with FSU in the 80s. GSC (!AA )led them 13 -10 two minutes into the 4th. they subbed their recevers out on evert play. In 1aa your first string are the only ones that can face an FBS team and hope to keep up. FSU threw 3 TDs in the 4th.

Unless you had money on the halftime line, your stories are not impressive. Seems to me GSC got beat soundly in both games. What am I missing?

Not before they $h!t their pants!
Hmmmm 1aa not a G5 fbs team.vs top fbs teams.

Also thank you Talon for keeping the conversation lively here during the offseason. The pregame GSU thread was epic.
How did things shake out for your starting QB who was injured for the Gopher game. That story of him and the bird shite on his windshield was strange. Felt bad for the guy.

THANK YOU TO THIS BOARD AND ALL ITS POSTERS THAT MADE THE PRE GAME FUN.

As far as our QBs arrest he was cleared and the officer was fired.

I have respect for Georgia Southern. The state of Georgia itself has great football, I like to think of it in similar terms as MN hockey. UMD hockey team won the National Title 2 years in a row.......... Before the football game this fall I expected Georgia Southern to look good at TCF and they did. Interesting that the Auburn fan had that opinion.

I have to say - THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!! ;-) SEE YOU NEXT YEAR ON YOUR DRIVE FOR ANOTHER BOWL!

I would NEVER like to play the Gophers in hockey, but I wish GSU would pick up a LAX team.

No, just borrowing. I don't want the financial responsibility.

Thanks, it means a lot to me comming from a P5 team that just won a bowl.

Still I hope we return to the FLEX option in 2 years.

I hope we get to meet again in the next 10 years. Your team and FANS are GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!![/B]

I thought the shotgun option was all the rage? I watched quite a bit of GSU football this season. My impression is that the offense is pretty easy to shut down, as long as the defense is well prepared, and has decent athletes. It might be different if you had a better QB. There is almost zero threat of getting beat by his arm. That’s kind of how it was with Auburn’s Bo Nix, but to a lesser degree. Keep him from getting loose, and play adequate man coverage, and he probably won’t complete many passes deeper than 5-10 yards. He completes a number of short passes to his 4 and 5 star athletes, so tackling in space is critical. Fortunately, our defense was able to do that, along with stuffing their run game.

I apologize for anything I’ve ever said that was offensive to you or GSU. Class acts all the way.

No need to apologies. I was the one that said GSU would win. I didn't recognize that we did not make the impovements from 2018 that we should have.

NOPE, who rums it and wins?

GSU in 2018?

I don’t know the different nuances of triple option football. I’m just saying unless you have a superior athlete at QB, it seems like it’s easy to stop for a well prepared, reasonably talented defense. I know Georgia Tech rolled up a shit load of rushing yards the year we beat them in the bowl game. I wasn’t impressed, and neither was our defense. How were those other teams not able to stop them?

Anyway, I think Tomlin has more potential than Werts. If you’re going to run that offense, you need blazing speed at that position. Maybe he’ll make a big jump next season and take over.

2 GSU HEAD COACHS running Flex
Erk Russell from 84-99 won 82% of his games using the Flex
Paul Johnon won 86% of his games using the flex from 1997-2o01

The Flexbone dominance at the FBS, FCS, and Division-2 level continues."

A FEW EXAMPLES

In the FBS… NAVY
11-2 with bowl win
The head coach, offensive coordinator, and most of the offensive staff worked under Paul Johnson.

In the FCS…
Kennesaw State is 6-1 in oct. and 37-8 in the last four years (they’ve had varsity football for five seasons).
Their head coach, Brian Bohannon, worked for years under Paul Johnson.

In Division-2…
Lenoir-Rhyne is 7-0, in Oct., and 19-2 in the last two years (they were 3-7 and running the Spread in 2017).
Their offensive coordinator, Bob Bodine worked under Paul Johnson.

Air Force 11-2 with bowl win

If you note a lot of "NEVER FLEXERS" like to argue points against PJs Style of Spread Triple Option attack. From 85-86 as OC at GSC we won. When he left for Hawaii ERK Russell still won with it. PJ took Hawaii to their first bowl game and won while he was there, He then became OC at Navy and won, He then took aver at GSU and won 86% of his games & then became HC at NAVY and turned that poor program around and won. I wish he had waited out for teams like Nebraska, ND Penn State where I think he could get the staff and players that he needed for FBS.

All the NEVER FLEXERS always point at PJs stay at GT as proof that the FLEX cant hold up in FBS, BECAUSE THE DEFENSES ARE TO FAST But If you watched any GT football over the years it was the defense that was really the big let down for GT. Heck 2 years prior GT won 11 games and went to a bowl. GT was just to inconsistent. PJs trained head coaches at NAVY and Army are doing very good jobs. Monken took over one of the worst teams in FBS and in year 3,4,5 he took them to bowl games and won all 3. ARMY did not do well this year, but Its my belief that they will be having down years because of the players they get, still the Army fans love what he has done for the program. Even of all people to stand up for the Flex can you believe that "Buzz Kill" chimed in?

Interesting. I don’t know much about those teams. Hope it all goes well for your squad!

I understand why. They are not P5 powers so I wouldn't think you'd follow them since they wouldn't effect the Gophers.

PARTY ON PITINOFAN. & THANKS for the well wishes.
