Gophers are a 13 point favorite for tomorrows game vs. Siena.

Thoughts? Who are you wagering on?

how many starters did Siena lose? That seems high.

Siena lost to Vermont by 4 at home. Lost their top three players, new coach and system. Tired from the travel to Minnesota. Expect the Gophers will win by more than 13.

Siena

We lost a tough one to Vermont at home (ending the nation's second longest home winning streak at 38) in a game we expected to win. Vermont led by 14 late, Siena cut the lead to 2 with 10 seconds left but fell 80-76.

Siena starters are likely to be:

PG: Kyle Griffin, 6'3 Jr.
SG: Clarence Jackson, 6'3 Sr.
SF: Owen Wignot, 6'6 Jr.
PF: OD Anosike, 6'8 So.
C: Ryan Rossiter, 6'9 Sr.

Rossiter is the preseason POY in the MAAC and one of the best mid-major big men in the country. He had 27 and 10 against Vermont.

Many Siena fans feel Siena should start talented freshman Rakeem Brookins (5'10 PG) and Trenity Burdine (6'6 SF) both solid see a lot of time off the bench. Coach Mitch Buonaguro will also play big men Davis Martens, Brandon Walters (Seton Hall transfer) and guard Jon Breeden off the bench.

Siena reportedly have some trouble flying into Minnesota today and did not get to practice, FWIW.

I hope we can give you a good game. It's a good game for Siena I'm glad we're playing it and it's on ESPNU!

I also hope that Siena will be a much better team in January-February-March then they will be in November-December and be a top 125 RPI team.

This is the first meeting between our schools since 1989 when Minnesota beat Siena 80-67 in a second round NCAA tournament game.

Rossiter and Jackson are definitely the guys we'll need to watch out for. If the Gophers have trouble defending the perimeter then Jackson could give us trouble. Rossiter is good down low, but I don't anticipate him being able to be dominant against Colton and Ralph. Gophers should win, obviously, but a 13-point spread does seem a little high.

This game shouldn't be close.....at all. Last year this might have been an entertaining game at the Barn but Siena is nothing to write home about this year. This should be a 20-25 point win...easy.

If someone gives me 13 points, I have to take a careful look at the underdog.

Should be a better test for the big men than Wofford. I expect Colton to have a better game if he's more physical. Also excited to see what Mbakwe will do in his second game.

Hopefully get to see the same kind of minutes from the freshman crew too. Tubby doesn't seem afraid to put several on the floor at once.

If we continue to miss FTs, I wouldn't take the spread...

Thanks for the info. If both teams play their best game I expect a Gophers blowout. That said, I can easily see our guys looking ahead to this week's Puerto Rico Tip-off and Siena coming in really focused after an unexpected loss resulting in a close game at The Barn. Most interesting match up will be our bigs go against a legitimately talented 6'9" opponent.

some of the same from above but in addition...

starters:
6'3" Jr Kyle Griffin - Better in a half court set and most of us feel he should be backing up either Brookins or Breeden.
6'4" Sr Clarence Jackson - Explosive scorer and generally gets "up" for big opponents.
6'6" Jr Owen Wignot - Insane jumper, very athletic but lacks a little on the basketball talent side. Tends to play faster than he should.
6'8" So OD Anosike - Brother of WNBA star and growing into his game by leaps and bounds. Should provide some good competition for your front line.
6'9" Sr Ryan Rossiter - preseason conference POY and tends to be a double double machine. Good competition for your front line

bench -

Guards:
5'10" Fr Rakeem Brookins. Will be starting for Siena shortly. Great scorer and very fast
5'11" So Jon Breeden. Showing signs of life as being able to contribute but seems to be the odd man out in playing rotations.
6'2" Jr Kyle Downey. STRONG capable player. Said to be the strongest player on the team. A coach's son so hes got a good basketball IQ as well. Problem is... hes injured for another two weeks.

Forwards
6'6" Fr Trenity Burdine (pronounced Burdeen). Long, athletic wing capable on both offense and defense. Obviously young and he missed about 3/4s of the preseason with a foot issue
6'9" So Davis Martens long athletic front court player who should provide valuable minutes against the imposing front line of Minnesota.
6'9" Jr Brandon Walters. Strong primarily inside player who is capable of blocking shots and rebounding. Seton Hall transfer who is still figuring out his role with this team.
6'5" Sr Stephen Priestly strong and a good rebounder but lacks in basketball IQ

the big issue tonight will be that outside of Rossiter and Jackson the Saints are pretty green. The previous coach road last year's starters to a nice paycheck at Iowa. That came at the expense of developing the bench. This year is a crash course in figuring out roles etc. First game saw some considerable growth even with the loss... but the big change will have to come when a change at starting PG finally takes place. i.e when the coach feels the rookie is ready to take the reigns. Siena is a whole different team with him on the floor.

No real expectations for tonights game as Im kind of with the coach on this one. This is a game you wish was played a few weeks from now after the team gets some time to iron out some of the wrinkles.

lets hope for a good game!
