Coach Kill had an abbreviated segment today on the Sports Huddle. He was on the 'CCO radio show later than usual because of being in a low cell coverage area.

1) Sid opened by asking about recruiting in May: Kill responded, "Got all our coaches on the road watching practices." He said evaluation was the biggest part of recruiting. If the recruits don't have spring football practices, they try to watch the players participate in baseball or track meets. They're also checking on their academics and meeting with school officials.

As to the number of available recruiting slots this year, "We are at maximum amount of scholarships this year . . . we'll hold a few inside back before going outside." (He was talking about giving a few of the slots to walkons first).

2 Sid asked about Ohio State transfer Brian Bobek: Kill said Bobek participated in the first half of spring drills, and then he was afflicted with a virus that went to his heart. Kill said they'll be cautious with (Bobek) and what they do in practice, "Optimistic he'll be ready to go."

3) Sid mentioned that the Gophers had 17 medical operations from last season through spring drills: Kill said it was an unusual year for injuries requiring surgery. He mentioned having to play three quarterback and three centers last season, and that it wasn't until the bowl game that the offensive line was intact. "Injuries and staying healthy is a big part of the game," said Kill. "We've got to be smart how we practice."

4) Dave Mona raised a question about scheduling TCU and Kill's friendship with the Horned Frogs coach, Gary Patterson: "We talk a lot about scheduling changes," replied Kill. He went on to say scheduling is all about money and scheduling is out of the coaches control. (He briefly mentioned the possibility of having an additional conference game and going from 12 to 13 games during the regular season.) As to the TCU game: "It'll be a big game for us . . . interesting storyline." He said the game will be a challenge because of TCU's talent. He then spoke briefly about his longtime friendship with Gary Patterson.

5) The topic of visiting outstate communities and a successful business that he recently visited was raised: When he gets back to Minnesota from his daughter's college graduation, Kill will rejoin the Gopher Sports Caravan. Kill sounded excited about getting out in the state and meeting the Gopher fanbase. He also likened football to successfully operated businesses . . . he said successful businesses and winning football teams share similarities.

DL...A heartfelt thanks once again from us out of staters. Much appreciated.

Ditto on the heartfelt thanks, proudgopher. Always look forward to this sunday feature!

I always tape the Huddle, but read DL also. THNX

DL - You should get paid for doing this. Does Gopherhole have my money?

My pay/reward is that GopherHole's Sports Huddle Summary has many views and is enjoyed by many fellow GopherHolers. I like listening to the weekly show and writing the summaries.

From I what I read it appears the TCU decision was not made by JK. This was Teague's decision and JK has to deal with it. I like Teague pushing the coach

This caught me by surprise. Am I reading this right that he has 25 scholarships available?

The number of available scholarships is always a moving target. Kill stated that he is presently at the maximum (85). This fall he should have 14 seniors on scholarship so that would mean that if nobody left he would have have 14 scholarships available for the class of 2014. For a variety of reasons there will very likely be more than that but there will not be 25. The following link to a reasonably accurate scholarship grid might give you a better feel how this works. I have to leave now but there is lot of things the impact the scholarship number and how accurate it is.

I think he's saying they are at 85 (maximum) and that we will have as many scholarships to give as we have seniors and transfers after this season.

I think that's what he meant also.

Good stuff DL as always.

I am also confused about the statement that scheduling is out of the control of the coaches. Wasn't it Kill who wanted Teague to buy out the UNC game? Is that not control? What am I missing?

The question of scheduling has been raised on the Sports Huddle in recent weeks. Your point about dropping UNC is well taken. Nevertheless, Coach Kill frequently says money plays a big part in scheduling, as does the influence of BTN and ESPN (again, the money aspect). I'm not sure Kill is in favor of expanding the number of games played in the regular season, 12 -13, which he expects to be the case sooner than later, as well as the expansion of conference games, 8-9. (Kill says quite often, "We should do what's best for the kids," when the topic of expanding schedules is raised. No doubt the expansion of games is about additional revenues.) Additionally, I sense he's not in favor of dropping FCS games in non-conference play (Big 10 Conference rule). He mentioned his days at Southern Illinois and looking forward to playing the "big boys." (He also specifically mentioned NDSU wanting to play BCS schools. If I'm not mistaken, NDSU was scheduled to play Wisconsin and Iowa in coming seasons.)

Also, waitwhat? made a good point when he said he understood coach Kill didn't have a say in the scheduling of TCU, which was made by Norwood Teague. I sensed, maybe incorrectly, that Kill wasn't in favor of playing TCU at this time.

FWIW, that's my take Sumtimegophs.
