Coach Kill had an abbreviated segment today on the Sports Huddle. He was on the 'CCO radio show later than usual because of being in a low cell coverage area.
1) Sid opened by asking about recruiting in May: Kill responded, "Got all our coaches on the road watching practices." He said evaluation was the biggest part of recruiting. If the recruits don't have spring football practices, they try to watch the players participate in baseball or track meets. They're also checking on their academics and meeting with school officials.
As to the number of available recruiting slots this year, "We are at maximum amount of scholarships this year . . . we'll hold a few inside back before going outside." (He was talking about giving a few of the slots to walkons first).
2 Sid asked about Ohio State transfer Brian Bobek: Kill said Bobek participated in the first half of spring drills, and then he was afflicted with a virus that went to his heart. Kill said they'll be cautious with (Bobek) and what they do in practice, "Optimistic he'll be ready to go."
3) Sid mentioned that the Gophers had 17 medical operations from last season through spring drills: Kill said it was an unusual year for injuries requiring surgery. He mentioned having to play three quarterback and three centers last season, and that it wasn't until the bowl game that the offensive line was intact. "Injuries and staying healthy is a big part of the game," said Kill. "We've got to be smart how we practice."
4) Dave Mona raised a question about scheduling TCU and Kill's friendship with the Horned Frogs coach, Gary Patterson: "We talk a lot about scheduling changes," replied Kill. He went on to say scheduling is all about money and scheduling is out of the coaches control. (He briefly mentioned the possibility of having an additional conference game and going from 12 to 13 games during the regular season.) As to the TCU game: "It'll be a big game for us . . . interesting storyline." He said the game will be a challenge because of TCU's talent. He then spoke briefly about his longtime friendship with Gary Patterson.
5) The topic of visiting outstate communities and a successful business that he recently visited was raised: When he gets back to Minnesota from his daughter's college graduation, Kill will rejoin the Gopher Sports Caravan. Kill sounded excited about getting out in the state and meeting the Gopher fanbase. He also likened football to successfully operated businesses . . . he said successful businesses and winning football teams share similarities.
Go Gophers!!
