Better late than never . . . thanks Killjoy for posting the podcast.
Coach Kill's comments about spring drills are as follows:
1) Sid asked how the first three days of spring football had gone: "First three practices have been very good . . . kids are focused." Kill said having the players focused has been a point of emphasis and will be during spring drills.
2) Sid asked about redshirts and who he expects to contribute this season: Kill mentioned the following players:
Damien Wilson - pleased with his effort. Kill sounded excited about Wilson's potential.
Jack Lynn - "He's looked good at linebacker."
Nick Rallis - Again, Kill sounded pleased with Rallis' potential and effort.
Lamonte Edwards - Kill said Edwards is getting a lot of reps. Again, he sounded positive.
Kill said last year's bowl game was important because of the practice reps that the young linebackers received in bowl preparations.
Turning to the offensive side, Kill cited the following players:
Jonah Pirsig, Ben Lauer, Maxx Williams. He said, "Philip Nelson has looked sharp." "Chris Streveler . . . it's hard to learn (system) in three days . . . it's hard for a freshman - overwhelmed." Kill also cited Mitch Leidner and said he's had three good days of practice. Additionally, Philip Nelson and Mitch Leidner have been helping Streveler during spring drills (adjusting to the college game and learning the playbook).
3) Dave Mona then asked about Ra'Shede Hageman and Brian Bobek (Ohio State transfer): "Brian has done a good job at center," Kill said. "Ra'Shede has a chance to be a high draft choice (NFL) . . . he's focused . . . big time force."
Kill also mentioned Jordan Hinojosa and Yosoub Timms. He said the defensive tackles have looked good in practice.
4) Sid asked about competition in the offensive line: "Great competition," said Kill. Players mentioned: Caleb Bak, Josh Campion, Jon Christenson (Jon has added fifteen pounds), Zac Epping, Tommy Olson. Kill sounded very excited when talking about Christenson at the center position. Kill, again, said Ed Olson is being withheld from spring drills. He sounded pleased with the offensive line and the progress they've made. He said you need 8 or 9 offensive linemen that can play. (They found that out last year because of the injury bug that hit the OL.) He closed the question saying, "I like what i'm seeing."
5) Mona asked about Jamel Harbison: "We have him in a green shirt (protecting him from contact) . . . he's not fully recovered, but he's made some plays."
6) Sid asked what the fifteen practices that they had for last December's bowl game meant to the team: Kill said the bowl game against Texas Tech and the fifteen practices had a big impact in the team's progress. It made the team closer and the redshirts and varsity players had more reps and practices to get better. As to the additional reps, "Football is a game of repetition (there's good and bad repetition) . . . we practiced well at the bowl site."
7) Sid asked about competition at the QB position: "Philip Nelsoon is playing well . . . Nelson has a great attitude." Reportedly, Nelson was asked during the week about the competiton. He responded saying he has to come to practice ready to hold onto his spot and that the competition will make the QB's better. Kill said that he's "Pleased with his (Nelson's) play." He mentioned Mitch Leidner but didn't say anything elaborate(at length) about Leidner's play, except he's pleased with his practice time as well.
8) Mona asked about the slot position: "Derrick Engel has looked good," said Kill. He mentioned Isaac Fruechte and K.J. Maye as well. "We're athletic at the receivers . . . feel good about depth inside and outside."
He also sounded very positive about Maxx Williams at tight end.
