Defensive Coordinator Tracy Claeys filled in for coach Jerry Kill on today's Sports Huddle. Kill was enroute on an air flight to an unannounced location. (Tracy Claeys said the national coaches convention is in Nashville, TN this week. So, maybe that's his flight destination.)

1) Sid opened by asking about recruiting: Claeys responded saying they're coming off the holidays and it's a "dead period" (no contact with recruits) until Thursday, after the coaches convention. The last three weeks will be extremely busy. Claeys said they'll be busy trying to hold on to their commitments and picking up a few more recruits: "We're recruiting to the very end."

2) Sid asked about redshirts that could provide immediate help: Claeys said they didn't redshirt a lot of players on defense. He then listed true freshmen (secondary players) that gained a lot of experience this past season: Eric Murray, Damarius Travis, and Antonio Johnson.

He then mentioned redshirt linebacker Jack Lynn. He sounded very high on Lynn. He also mentioned a defensive lineman (redshirt) Yoshoub Timms. Neither played this year and retained their redshirt status.

Lastly, he mentioned JUCO linebacker Damien Wilson. Wilson was his JUCO conference defensive player of the year. Claeys said Wilson has the size and speed to play all three linebacker positions. He's on campus for the spring semester and will participate in spring drills.

3) Dave Mona asked if Lamonte Edwards might return to the running back position: Claeys sounded high on Edwards; however, he also said he needs to have more reps in spring drills, so that he learns and is comfortable with the linebacker position. It sounded as though spring will be a pivotal time for Edwards. Claeys does not want to give up Edwards, however, it sounded as though if there isn't progress his return to the offensive side is a distinct possibility. (That's my take on what he said.)

4) Sid listed seniors that have used up their eligibility: Claeys, again, spoke highly about Eric Murray's potential at the corner back position. He also said they're deep at safeties and, if necessary, some of the players could play the corners.

He said recruiting defensive backs is a priority. They hope to sign 2-3 more secondary recruits.

5) Sid asked about the importance of the 15 days of practice for the Texas Bowl: "It made a huge difference." He focused most of his remarks on the redshirts that made the trip. During the season they spent most of the time running the opposition's offenses and defenses. But in Texas they focused on Minnesota's schemes, "They felt a part of the team, again." The coaches worked with the redshirts individually at the end of practices and went over their practice video tapes.

6) Dave Mona asked for more information on Jack Lynn: Claeys said the redshirted linebacker was signed out of Chicago and was on a team that reached the state's semi-finals. Lynn arrived on campus at 215 pounds; however, he's now about 235 pounds. He also said he has great length and weight, "Spring will be important for him."

7) Sid tried to get some information about QB competition next year: Claeys said you have to recruit QBs and tailbacks every year. He concluded saying the backups aren't happy serving as backups and often transfer. That's why it's important to recruit QBs and tailbacks every year.

8) Claeys closed by talking about recruiting the southern states hard. They do a lot of evaluation of high school players in their spring drills. They got in on players that weren't high profiles, but now are being recruited hard by other schools because of their senior year and all-star game performances. The recruits, when they get them on campus, love the Twin Cities, the school and coaches. He sounded positive about this year's recruiting, however, he acknowledged the next three weeks are crucial - keeping their current commitments and picking up a few more recruits for positions of need.

DL - I also had the same reaction to Claeys' comments. It wasn't just what he said but what he didn't say. It will be interesting to watch how Edwards does in spring practice. My take was that it is time to either fish or cut bait. I am sure that the message that they want him to hear.

Thanks again, as always DL. From reading your summary, it looked to me like there was not a whole lot of newsworthy information, mainly due to the current dead period, and coaches not being able to comment on current verbals until LOI signing date.

I also try not to read too much into any answers to questions on the Huddle, so as to not get into any over analyzing problem.

Killjoy commented, " It wasn't just what he said but what he didn't say." comes to mind. Not that Killjoy doesn't have a right to do that, but I just don't try to interpret "what someone doesn't say" into something.

Thanks DL! Those comments on Edwards are interesting, especially coupled with the glowing reports on Jack Lynn. Perhaps he's just trying to motivate Lamonte.

Man oh man Jerry kill is taking a bearing from the callers. And more ripping on the unc fiasco. Whn Dave and Sid piled on kill and Teague over the unc deal again.

I think we will be fine at CB next year with Shabbazz and Murray with Balthazor for depth, but beyond that not a lot on the horizon. I hope that we can land a player or two here at the end of the recruiting period who can be difference makers down the road. This year, our LB play was really bad. Cooper and Rallis seem like good kids but neither were BCS caliber, nor were Manuel and the rest of them who got reps. I think Manuel should take a step up next year and I like the attitude he plays with and Edwards is a great athlete so there is hope for him. Regardless, it's good to hear that Lynn might be a player as we need a big upgrade at LB for next year for us to take us to another level.

Agree with most of that. Just wish we'd cut Cooper a little more slack. He was a Safety in size, strength and temperament. They needed an Outside Linebacker and he went were he was needed. He did a pretty good job if you consider that he was always fighting outside of his weight class.

You can say the same thing about Rallis he was an OLB playing MLB.

Cooper was certainly a BCS caliber LBer. They might not be All Big sort of players, but Cooper did some things very well. He got a little beat up in the run, but he was good in coverage and covered a lot of ground. I really think he was another one of the reasons why we were good against the pass this season. He played LBer for a BCS team that had an average defense. How is he not a BCS LBer?

Rallis struggled.
Manuel I thought looked OK at times, but he's situational right now.

I don't think Edwards switches back to offense. Unfortunately for him, he'd be buried on the depth chart at RB. He might not end up getting a lot of PT at LBer, but I think it's sink or swim for him at that position.

First of all I am going to do exactly what Dr.Don warned me not to do, i.e speculate on what is behind Claey's comments. Dr.Don is right to be concerned about this but I did find Claey's choice of words very interesting. First, It is clear that they are not satisfied with Edward's progress at this point. They haven't given up on him but I believe they want to see a lot more from him and soon. Second, it seems to me that Bob Loblaw's bolded statement is a reasonable conclusion. Therefore, if you accept the above assumptions, it is logical to conclude that they are letting Edward's know that it is time for him to commitment himself and raise his level of effort and play. I am not personally in a position to know if this is correct but I think it is fair to say that the coaches are saying that the status quo is not an option. It should be fun and very interesting to see how all this plays out during spring practice.

Edwards wouldn't give us anything at RB that we don't already have. We already have two downhill backs in Williams and Kirkwood. I like Edwards right now as an outside linebacker.

Could anyone see him as a strong saftey?

I don't think he would play well enough in space to be a safety. He's very fast, but I don't think he's flexible or quick enough to cover a D-1 wide receiver. He's a physical player by nature, and I think OLB is probably his best position if he can pick it up. During his freshman year, he even got some snaps at DE when they were desperate for a pass rush.

Exactly my thoughts - Don't need 3 of the same type of RB. Unfortunately he is going to need to stand out at LB this spring to get PT.

with Cooper, Rallis, and Reeves all graduating and Beal recovering from injury, he probably just has to show up to get playing time.

The deal with Edwards seems to be that he is not an instinctive player. He may be the most athletic guy we have at LB, but he does not know the position well enough, or react fast enough. To some extent the same is true of Manuel, but Manuel looked like he was making progress at the end of the season because he was helthy enough to practice and play. A big part of Edward's problem is he has not been healthy enough to get enough reps in practice tha they can play him on the field.
I believe he had the same issues at RB, so moving him back there would not solve anything. I believe his HS coach told Coach Kill LEs best position was LB. He needs to master LB techniques and recognition and stay healthy enough to get on the field, moving him is unlikely to solve anything.

How about Westerhaus? Does he need more time, is he a "bust", etc? He was considered a real nice recruit for LB or TE when he signed.
Also, how about Metilus? I know he's very strong and has showed potential. LB or future DL ?

Matilus supposedly was really impressive his FR season while being Redshirt, I believe he was Defensive Scout Team player of the year. However, with our less than stellar LBer player last season, I would have hoped he would have gotten some PT if he was capable. However, we often played with only 2 LBers, and we had a bunch of upperclassmen (Rallis, Beal, Cooper, Grant, Reeves and even Manuel was a JR). So I don't know, he must've been impressive as FR, but I know very little about him.

Westerhaus, I know next to nothing about him. I imagine he'll be fighting for time at MLB, I don't think they'll move someone over to TE from MLB right now (we seem deep at TE and thin at MLB).

I am probably alone on this, but I kind of wish the staff would have considered Duke Anyanwu more at MLB. He came in tall and not huge, but he's got a massive frame and is supposedly putting a ton of weight on. At MLB, you'd be wasting some of his ability as a pass catcher, but he is such a good athlete, he reminds me of James Onwualu from Cretin (going to Notre Dame) in that he's just a good athlete, good football player who will get larger and then decide where he plays.

Yeah, Manuel and Edwards have a lot of similar traits. I think Manuel makes mistakes at 100 MPH and Edwards sort of doesn't react quick enough. Edwards is a great athlete, he's strong and fast, I think he's a guy who eventually figures it out. He's going to be a JR next year, look at the massive improvements in a similar player like Hageman (big and fast but not a natural DT) and even DL Wilhite (I believe he was a HS RB). Often times those guys figure it out later, I hope that's the case for Edwards as well.
