Gopher targets to play in Global Challenge
By Marcus Fuller on August 5, 2009

The Nike Global Challenge arguably puts the top 30 high school basketball players in America against some of the top young talent from around the world.

The Gophers have several recruiting targets playing in the event from the U.S. and outside this country. The U.S. players are Iowa wing Harrison Barnes, Georgia guard Jelan Kendrick and Detroit point guard Ray McCallum. Barnes and McCallum play for Team Midwest. The international player is Toronto center Maurice Walker, who is playing for Team Canada.

Incoming Gophers freshmen Royce White and Rodney Williams Jr. both played in the Global Challenge last season for one of the American teams. The games are scheduled to run Friday through Sunday at Liberty High School in Hillsboro, Ore.

Of the four players competing in this year's Global Challenge, Barnes and McCallum are probably the most likely to consider visiting Minnesota. But the odds are stacked against the Gophers, who are recruiting against Duke, North Carolina, Kansas and Kentucky for Barnes and Kansas, Arizona, UCLA, Florida and Michigan State for McCallum.

-- Tennessee wing Casey Prather trimmed his list to seven schools recently and the Gophers weren't among them. They also received some good and bad news from the state of Missouri. Columbia guard Ricky Kreklow gave an oral commitment to hometowm Missouri, but Kansas City point guard Trevor Releford is still considering playing for Tubby Smith.
