Congrats to TT - seems like a great role:

Former University of Minnesota basketball player Trent Tucker has been named athletic director for Minneapolis Public Schools. Tucker was drafted in the first round by the New York Knicks in 1982 and played 11 seasons in the NBA. His final season was 1992-93, when he played for the Chicago Bulls’ NBA championship team.

Since retiring, Tucker has been a fixture on the Minneapolis sports scene as a motivational speaker, working with underpriviliged and at-risk youth, as a color analyst for the Timberwolves and as a the co-host of a weekend radio show on KFAN.

“I’ve always placed a huge value on the role athletics play in the development of children,” said Tucker in a news release. “I am committed to strengthening Minneapolis Public Schools’ athletic program through teamwork, community-building and partnerships.”

Tucker replaces John Washington, who retired last fall.

Go Gophers!!

Seems like a good fit. Good for him. I could never see him as a tireless recruiter/assistant, flying across the country and attending random high school games, etc..unless of course Flip was hired.. This makes perfect sense.

Plus he wii get to use "basketball" in many sentences. Win,win!

Go Gophers!!

Good for him. The Minneapolis Schools need all the help they can get, particularly in athletics.

What a joke, it's a PR move and the Minneapolis public schools will suffer because of it, he's got such a good administrative background related to issues in public education, he's got extensive background in athletics and it's role and problems in a system like Minneapolis, if you are going to go outside at least get someone that is qualified in the job.

I am all in favor of this so we can hopefully put a stop to any and all "informed" name droppers calling for Flip to be the Gopher Coach or on the staff. Thank you Minneapolis.

Sounds like a HUGE job if he's AD for all Mpls Public Schools? Boys and girls programs, all sports? That job can drive people crazy in one school. Maybe I don't understand the scope of the job. Perhaps someone can enlighten me.

Congrats to Trent! I agree it sounds like a C level hire. I wonder how many reports he will have. My kid's school, Mpls Washburn, has/had their own AD so maybe each school does and they will report up through him? I could see him being really good at getting some donors and business people involved to help invest. The athletic departments are funded at a much lower level than the suburban schools. Great for Minneapolis city basketball too.

Congrats for Tucker. Seems like a good guy, but one thing the Minneapolis Conference is strong in is basketball. They don't need any help in that aspect. They need to focus on the revitalization of football and baseball that once was strong in the City. Hockey has been a lost cause since the late 90's. Sad. Also actual enrollment and participation is weak, because most athletes can't qualify because of grades. Trent has a big mess on his hands. I wish him the best of luck.

I don't understand the hire, but won't second guess it. However, for those that think this may be less work than an asst basketball coach at the U don't get the job. A high school AD is the most thankless job there is, with endless hours, and there are sports and activities you are supervising and being visible at six nights a week. In addition, you have the same level of responsibility for badminton as you do football or basketball at the high school level. It's a huge job, with huge responsibility.

As a Washburn grad, Pratt is a great AD

When I decided to get married, the second thing I did was call the school and asked them to leave a message for my father not to work late that night.

You got that right, Ozzy&Ray. My father was a high school AD. Thankless job is 100% on the money. I can only imagine how much worse things are today dealing with the increased number of helicopter parents. Seeing firsthand the crap he had to deal with -- especially with regards to dingbat parents -- is the #1 reason I decided not to follow him into the field of administration/coaching.

Tough job. Wish Trent the best.

I, too was previously a teacher/coach. My dad was NOT. So I had no one in my family to guide me into my career choice before I went to Med School to become a proctologist. I figured if I had to work with a$$holes, I would make money doing it. Anyway, I digress. My son followed me into Education as a teacher. He coached some in Junior High/JV level positions. Got fed up with what you said, went back to Grad School, got Masters plus Admin Cert, and is very happy with his choices, as he is now a very well paid and respected as an Elementary School Teacher/Assistant Principal. I am very, very, very proud of him.
