The other day, while holding forth on his favorite post-NFL topic — the plight of North American ducks — the retired Vikings coach mentioned casually that he and a friend crash-landed a plane in Canada this fall while in pursuit of mallards and other fowl.

And yes, the hunting trip continued unabated — albeit in a U-Haul truck.

The incident occurred Oct. 17. Grant, who is 88, and his pilot pal, Jim Hanson, of Albert Lea, belly-flopped a twin-engine Beechcraft to a screeching stop a couple hours short of their destination in Kindersley, Saskatchewan.

On impact, the plane’s propellers shredded, showering sparks. Boom, Grant’s Labrador retriever, the third passenger aboard, seemed simultaneously afoot and aloft as the plane careened to a stop.

“The fire trucks came first,” Grant said. “Then the security people. They seemed to think we might be terrorists.”

Go Gophers!!

Such a Bud Grant story. Gophs to deploy him to Drederick Snelson's house. I think young Drederick would be too scared to decommit after a visit from Bud

Bud Grant > Chuck Norris

Edit - just saw someone else beat me to the comparison.

Did Bud accuse the pilot of being inebriatred? :pig::pig:

They left out how many ducks they bagged.

Bud was on espn1500 today with Reusse at 3:00. Fun listen. Talking hunting(all over) and flying with his friend who is a big time pilot. Talked about dogs....."there's smart dogs and dumb dogs, just like QB's, gotta have smart ones". The dumb ones he gave away to friends.

Should be on their podcast tomorrow.

I like Bud best when he's talking about the treaty of 1837.

Don't get me wrong, Bud was a good coach. It is all this "he is so tough", "he never wore a hat", etc. crap that bores me to death.

Fair enough, but Bud is so tough, heck, he never wore a hat for gosh sake!

Go Bud Grant!!

He's one of Bierman's Junction Boys for heaven's sake!

I saw him over at the Capitol a few years ago when he was working on a Legacy funding project and he looked a bit on the frail side physically. He was in his mid-80s so it wasn't that much of a surprise (well, a little surprising because I always have a picture in my mind's eye of Bud and he was a pretty hale and hearty), but he's obviously still got a lot in the tank.

Not sure where the.. he never wore a hat came from. Outside, he almost always has a baseball cap on... Coaching or hunting. I haven't seen him in a stocking cap pulled down over his ears on a 30 degree day though. lol budgrant.jpgbudgrant1.jpg

Not too many 3 sport stars for the Gophers... Bud played football, basketball and baseball for the Gophers. I'm not sure at age 88, but talking to Bud even in a good mood from the 60's to the 90's he was just naturally intimidating to talk to.

My father still rave about what a dirty player Bud was in 1960s Winnipeg recreational basketball. Said it was unreal how many elbows he threw and the dirty tricks he tried.

I'm sure Grant shot over his limit on the ducks. He was citationed by the DNR for baiting deer a few years back. Plus, you'll never see him in a "Catch and Release" shirt.
