A brother and I were reminiscing about the glory years (early 60s) of Gopher football and he reminded me of a couple of the great game slogans that were used in those days: "Wish Again, Michigan" and "Boil Ill in Oil" were two that he remembered. Were they limited to Homecoming games?

All I can remember is "We're Rose Bowl Bound."

Does anybody have a list of those game slogans used on buttons and pennants?

At the Nebraska game, I was the only one in the stadium with a Gopher pennant? Somebody ought to do something about that.

I have most of the homecoming pins back to 1941. Here are a few of them.
Chill-inois, Silence illi-noise, scuttle the Cats, Pursue Purdue, Whipurdue, Skindiana, Blast the boilers, Tomahawk the Hawks, Husk the Huskers, Haunt the Hawks, End-iana, Smothern Cal, Scuttle Pitt, Hoedown Hoosiers, Spillinois, Spook the House that Vanderdilt, Boil-illin-oil, French Fry Illini, give the Bucks a WARMath, Shoo Iaway. There use to be a lot of effort that went into the homecoming pins. With each of these sayings there would be a sketch of some kind.

Den The Wolverines

Squash Wash.

Beat Iowa (Again)

Thanks guys. Maybe I'll have to be the guy to do the research to create the "compleat Gopher Homecoming slogan" set.

Here are a few more. First year in the dome we played Indiana. Slogan was DOMEsticate the Hoosiers. The Bucky stops here. Reverse Northwestern's Charge.

I always loved:

Go *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# a dead deer, Wisconsin.

and

Hey, Iowa, get your ass in the gym and work out until you're nearly dead, and then go smoke some weed. Oh...and Floyd is hanging out at Bierman again, so get used to it.

[Warning: These might not be official homecoming slogans. Reading these slogans may induce: Upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, hives, difficultly breathing, dizziness, genital swelling, man boobs, or loose bowels.]

No doubt the fact that it is 4am is helping, but you got me to laugh the girl and the dog awake.

Looked into it some more.

As of January 2, 1961 (the date of the Rose Bowl v. Washington):

Head Coach: Murray Warmath
U Prez: O. Meredith Wilson
MPLS mayor: P. Kenneth Peterson
St. Paul mayor: George J. Vavoulis
MN governor: Elmer L. Andersen

I even looked at the 1960 Gophs roster, even though Fiz doesn't look like a college kid in the drawing. Nobody sounds very "Fiz" like. Driving me bananas, guys! :)

Back in 61', they came up with a new fangled gameday thing called a baloon, made of something called latex. When it finally wore out it made a sound like "Fizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz"

What do I win?

While reading your warning, I was nervous that I may have one of those symptoms but as I read them, I grew more and more relieved to find that I don't. Then I saw it. Man boobs... Ugh. DAMNIT!! lol

That said, I love both of your slogans. I saw we keep 'em.

Haha. I HOPE you're kidding. I want this mystery to end with a better answer! :)

Annihilate Ohio State!

That slogan was on the buttons from the 1985 heartbreaker at the dome vs OSU.

Skindiana, Celebrate Over Champaign, and Watch out for Lou, OSU.

In the 50s they were going to play Pitt and the students chose "Disarm Pitt" but that got shot down

If it is the same game -- the finally went with "Scuttle Pitt," Nov. 3 1956. My father brought some of these pins when he moved back to India. I looked for them when I was at Minnesota -- 89-93, did not find them. Back in India now, I regret not getting my hands on my years' pins.

Did they stop making them?

My favorite was always chanting "Smells Like Yeast" at the opposing team's cheerleaders.

No, they still make them. Many show up on E-Bay. Just search under University of Minnesota Homecoming pinbacks, or Minnesota Gopher Homecoming buttons.

Thanks.
Just checked...got one.

Ebay search with just "University of Minnesota homecoming pin." seems to bring up more options.

Which one did you get? I've loaded up on 7 myself this month. Can't get away from some of these. Too funny.

...a ha...so you were the one bidding. Got the boring 1988 pin, I came to the US in Dec. 88. Also the 1981 one. I have just ordered them, I get it only in a couple of months. Gave a cousin's shipping add. in the US, he lugs it east for me in May, along with some bourbon.

Apropos the mule, my cousin went to tOSU, he has no idea about this; they have pins but he has not seen any with game slogans. How common are the humorous pins?

Obviously, I'm biased, but UMN pins are the most funny. Iowa had a few comical ones I saw. Every other college I search are just plain and boring.

I may have an answer to the question "Who is Fiz." Back in 1960, Clark gas stations had an ad promotion featuring a cartoon character named Fiz. I think that the button that is pictured is a promomotinal item that you would get when you filled up at a Clark station prior to the 1961 Rose Bowl. I'm not 100% sure on this one but have a hunch that this is who Fiz is.

Leave it to the good Doctor!

Did some digging on "Clark gas stations" and "Fiz" and came up with this link:
http://www.retrocom.com/retromilw/more_milwaukee_memories_page_10.htm

"Clark Oil and Refining Corporation was one of the prime radio sponsors of the then-Milwaukee
Braves baseball broadcasts. In 1960-61, Clark produced a two-year advertising campaign featuring two characters named
Fizbee and the Chief. Both characters were voiced by the famous Warner Brothers cartoon talent, Mel Blanc.

The premise of these radio spots, which aired between innings of Braves broadcasts, was that the Chief was Fizbee's boss
at Clark Oil, a blustery blowhard who was always coming up with hair brained schemes to promote Clark gasoline. Fizbee was
a meek, mild mannered Everyman, who always saved the Chief from his ridiculous ideas. The commercials were quite humorous and very popular."

If you look at the pics in the link, Fizbee is CLEARLY our Fiz. Thanks, Doc! :)

Got another pinback question for you guys.

On my travels to antique shops last month, I went to Anoka and found an ol' U pinback that had Goldy on it. Goldy has a rose in his teeth and the caption reads, "Go-pher Roses." I've never seen it before! Any ideas what year this is from? GopherRoses.jpg

My first guess would be one of our Rose Bowl years, but the way Goldy is drawn, he looks more likes the 1966 homecoming ("Shoo-Iaway") Goldy.1966minnesota.JPG
