Failing to win in the program's first New Year's Day bowl game since 1962 was deflating for coaches, players and the 20,000 or so Gophers fans at the game in Orlando, Fla.

But things are looking up.

From quarterback Mitch Leidner's passing performance to big plays from a defense that returns several key players and plenty of young talent, the Gophers showed signs they could be even stronger in 2015..

Gophers coaches have raved about the size and talent of freshman receivers Isaiah Gentry (6-foot-4,190), Melvin Holland Jr. (6-3, 205) and Desmond Gant (6-3, 200).

Sophomore Duke Anyanwu was arguably the team's best pass-catching tight end before suffering a season-ending knee injury during fall camp

"Everyone doesn't realize that Duke had a torn ACL in camp, and he's really good as well," Leidner said. "We're going to have some weapons at receiver next year. I watched these three redshirt freshmen play during these bowl practices, and they can get after it. They've got some fire to them. So it's exciting. It's a bright future for us."
