This can't be. All long time readers of GopherHole know that the Gophers are last in Football and Basketball expenses and FIRST in non-football/basketball expenses.

You mean all the U's money hasn't gone to the golf and rowing teams?:drink:

Ha, I was surprised we ranked as high, makes me sick seeing Texas double us though. How do they create that much more revenue?? They have lots of in State competition with Texas A&M, Texas Tech, TCU, Houston and many other smaller schools.

A National Championship game helps....

Their revenue has to do with a ton of people in the state who are die hard fans who are willing to shell out big bucks in support of the program and tons of merchandise being sold. Their revenue disparity from others will be even greater once they get the Longhorn TV network off the ground in the next couple of years.

I'm guessing most of that 'other' $17 million is BTN money and obviously most of the $8.5 million by non-football/basketball is hockey money. These two things help make up the deficit. You can see the impact of the BTN. 23rd in the nation, but sill only 7th in the conference. And I"m guessing Illinois and Purdue are not far behind us.

Indiana is the next closest program in revenue at roughly $68.8 million. Purdue, Illinois and NW are well behind at $61.5M, $58.5M and $48.9M. Indiana ranks #29 in total revenue.

Yes, it would be nice to see other schools non-football/basketball revenue. I think Hockey revenue must be significant for MN, WI, MI, etc.

I thought the 17mil was a little low for BTN. I thought this was projected to be more in the 20-23mil range per school? Especially since this number must also include local media for radio, TV, etc of all sports.
Also, does merchandising come into this, or does that simply go to the U and not Athletics? Certainly there is several million in merchadising and licensing for sports apparel. If all this is considered, - the 17 mil is low with BTN money.

Texas has a population of 25 million. Minnesota has a population of 5.2 million. Schools other than Texas and Texas A&M really do not matter to most Texans. U of Texas is by far the most important.

Middle of the Big Ten is really where you would expect Minnesota Athletics to be based on financial considerations. I really think Mason had the program about where it would be expected. Brewster dropped it off a cliff.

There are supposedly only a handful of D1 programs who make money on Hockey and Minnesota is one of them. I don't think that Michigan, tOSU or Michigan State do.

Interesting how close the divisional split is in terms of football revenues (when you include Nebraska):

Minnesota's division: $43,960,182
Wisconsin's division: $39,637,570

We have more sports than most schools, and our intermediate sports field consistently decent teams. I see no surprise here.

hockey revenue....probably pays the salary of our offensive line coach!

Hockey revenue is almost $7 Million. Not a small amount at all. For those that post this data and now are yacking about it. Let me just say this. This is the same data you didn't believe when it showed MN last in revenue and you said the data was wrong. Now you want to hypocritically say it is right?

Aslo, the football revenues of IA are $45 Million and for MSU they are $44 Million. MN football revenue is $32 Million. Who here actually believes that with $12 Million less in revenue, the budget is the same as MSU? Also, the data show an 87% increase in expenses for MN in 2009. A 24% increase in revenue from 2008. Does this make sense?

Actually, these revenues prove exactly what folks were trying to say. That with the new stadium we were not last behind Indiana and were actually in the middle of the pack. Oddly enough, this matches what the U was saying at that time too (weird).

That said, these numbers are still extremely difficult to use for comparison because of the apples to oranges reporting schemes between schools. As a result, I still don't think they are worth that much (i.e. are we really top 25 in revenue? Prob, but who knows for sure).

But no, I don't think anyone who pointed out the flaws in the older numbers has anything to apologize for because if you applied logic you could see why they made no sense and couldn't possibly represent the numbers since TCF opened.

Who knows if the U changed how they reported their expenses or revenues? Again, while I like the positive trends in this data this is why I still think everything from them must be taken with a grain of salt.
