After coach Kill left today's Sports Huddle, Sid Hartman and Mike Max visited about Gopher football. Sid's comments:

"They'll be a lot better than people think." However, he sounded his concerns about this year's defense. Sid spoke highly of the freshmen class and the JUCOS, and as a result, he's looking forward to the 2013 season. Additionally, he sees the Gophers going 6 and 6 this season and playing in a bowl game. The additional practices in bowl preparations is extremely important in a team's progressive development.

Sid then talked about Iowa and Wisconsin selling out their large stadiums and Minnesota not selling out TCF Bank Stadium. As a result, the Hawkeyes and Badgers have more money than the Gophers for recruiting and amenities. Sid and Mike Max are perplexed as to why the students don't support the Gophers and why they don't attend the games now that the Gophers are back on campus.

Topic of discussion turned to athletic facitlities or lack thereof. Sid is in favor of a football facility next to the stadium. He went on to enumerate facilities that are degrading and the importance of improving current structures and having new facilites for the athetic teams.

Sid said Williams Arena will be improved (they won't remove Williams Arena, but sorely needs improvements).

Sid spoke highly about Marquies Gray athletic abilities and that he believes he'll be an NFL quarterback. Max said he'll be in the NFl, however, he claims pro scouts are looking at other positions.

Go Gophers!!

Sid also said "...if you read my column this morning, it doesn't make any sense...":)

As much as I appreciate Sid's life long devotion to Gopher sports, when has he ever been right about how good they might be. He would never say that they are going to be terrible this year. He clearly always sees the "glass half full" when it comes to the gophers.

In Sid's perspective, every coach since Murray Warmath was going to be the one to turn it around.

When and IF I reach 93-94 years of age like Sid, my world will be "glass half full" also, every day I wake up. :)

A (6-6) season will bring many students back. Minnesota is a school at needs to win to fill in the student section. I think it has obviously already been proven that simply building a new stadium does nothing for the students at the U. Build it and they don't come - win and they will....or at least I hope they will.

Sid also told Maxx he thought Valencia was a good influence in the Twin's dugout.

Ehh, I would hope so, but I kind of doubt it.

We were coming off back to back 6-6 seasons in 2010 and our attendance dropped. I think we need to be pretty succesful for a long amount of time to change the culture. Mase put out a decent team for a long time and then fans simply went away.

As far as the original post, I have to agree with Sid. I think the Gophers will be better than a lot of people think. If you read a lot of the national preview magazines and websites, they're almost all picking the Gophs to finish last, with 3 or 4 winds. So, if the Gophs can win 6 or 7 games, they will be "better than a lot of people think."

As far as generating excitement among the students, that could be a multi-year project. I think it will take some big wins, and some conference wins, to get people back on the bandwagon. The U will also have to find ways to improve the game-day experience, and make going to games "fun."

For those of you were at the Metrodome that day, you'll remember that the dome was ELECTRIC at the start of that game. It was up there with the Twins playoff games in terms of buzz & energy. Stayed that way for 3 quarters too, until we pissed it down our leg.

If we had held on that night, who knows where the program would be now, or whether Glen would still be on the sideline. But give Mason credit for getting us to that point. Just couldn't get over the hump, and the rest was history. As others have said, it'll take a few wins to get us back to that point. Probably at least another season or two. The question will be if we are lucky enough to have the opportunity to turn the corner again, will Kill and his team be able to seal the deal?
