Golden Gophers coming to War Gym for exhibition tilt
VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds are rekindling their tradition of hosting an early season exhibition game against NCAA competition this coming fall. UBC welcomes the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers to War Memorial Gym for an exhibition tilt September 2 at 7:00 p.m.
Last season the T-Birds traveled south for a pair of contests against Oklahoma and Oral Roberts in November after historically hosting NCAA schools around the Labour Day weekend.
In 2008, UBC was 2-1 versus NCAA competition at home picking up wins over Cal State Fullerton and San Francisco State while dropping a decision to Tulsa.
The Gophers have made back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances under head coach Tubby Smith, who won a national title with Kentucky in 1998 and an Olympic gold medal in 2000. This past year, after a 21-14 regular season in the Big Ten, Minnesota lost in the first round versus Xavier.
Minnesota's lineup features notable Canadian talent on the roster with Devoe Joseph, of Pickering, Ont., and Maurice Walker, of Scarborough, Ont. Both alumni of Canada's junior national team, Joseph will enter his junior year with the Gophers, while Walker was one of Minnesota's prized off-season recruits.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LEGENDARY BASKETBALL COACH TUBBY SMITH COMING TO LANGLEY
LANGLEY, British Columbia - The Big Ten affiliated Minnesota Golden Gophers, led by coach Tubby Smith, will play the Trinity Western University men’s basketball team on September 3 at the Langley Events Centre as part of the Spartans 2010-11 preseason schedule.
Under the tutelage of Smith – who coached Kentucky to a national championship in 1998 and has led four different schools to the NCAA tournament – the Golden Gophers come to the West Coast having qualified for the NCAA Division I Championship each of the last two years and will give the Spartans a serious litmus test early in the 2010-11 campaign.
“Playing a quality Big 10 Team will give our new team an opportunity to have an early evaluation,” said Spartans coach Scott Allen. “We will be challenged to meet their physical style of play and make an early season statement.”
Since Smith joined Minnesota three years ago, the Golden Gophers have become a legitimate threat in the Big Ten. Most recently, the Golden Gophers made it to the conference championship game – knocking off the likes of Michigan State and Purdue – before losing to Ohio State 90-61.
In the 2010 NCAA tournament, the Golden Gophers (seeded 11th) were eliminated in the first round by Xavier (seeded 6th) 65-54 while in the 2009 rendition, Minnesota (seeded 10th) lost in the opening round to Texas (seeded 7th) 76-62.
While TWU will be tasked with a mighty challenge when the Golden Gophers are in town, the early season contest will be just the start of a much anticipated, and much longer, season for the Spartans.
This year, TWU will have 12 home games (four more than last year) as the Spartans overall schedule increases from 18 games to 24 games. With Simon Fraser bound for NCAA Div. 2, Canada West created a balanced schedule that will see the Spartans play every team twice during the regular season.
The Spartans will open their CIS season on the road in Lethbridge (October 22-23) before returning home to play UBC (October 29-30) in a much-anticipated matchup between TWU and last year’s national championship runners-up.
The defending national champions from Saskatchewan will also make the trip to Langley this year as the Spartans will host the Huskies January 28-29.
The start of the 2010-11 season will also give Spartans fans their first look at new recruits Jesse Jeffers, Kyle Coston, Lucas Nugteren and Eli Mara as well as 2009 redshirt transfer from UFV Tristen Smith.
