This mainly is for Lower Division's being written by people at St. Thomas. Shows how tough recruiting can be. I think it also shows the importance that the Gophers get kids in outstate MN to want to come to the U and earn a scholarship as a walk-on. HS QB's can be moved to other positions and be successful.

Mentions some Big School QB's as well.

Nice read... thanks for the link.

Great story. I went to high school at the same time as the Becker boys from Blue Earth, and played against them fairly regularly in sports(we were in the same conference). Granted they were both freakishly athletic and I was struggling to see playing time, but it's get great to see them both get some publicity.

I think it would be great if the new football coach really recruited Greater Minnesota, even if it just for walk on talent. Growing up in small town(population 4500) if we had a graduate go on and play for the U it would be a huge deal and the entire town would get behind the Gophers. Not to mention that it would provide a great human interest story for Gopher Football.

I personally have a hard time believing that there isn't a couple legit B10 prospects in small town Minnesota every year, especially along the O-Line. Even if they aren't the most talented or don't have the quickest feet I would venture to guess that there is 2-3 corn feed 6-4 310 farm boys out there every year. They would also completely bust their @$$ for the team too. And you never know they could be the Eslinger too.

Eslinger was a monster in high school. Everyone knew he was going to be a big deal at the collegiate level. When I was an underclassmen we played against him in the state championship game. He was MVP of the game....as a linemen. He would literally block 2-3 guys every single play. They had a short, small, slow RB but it didn't matter. Anyone could have run behind him and gotten yards.

It's probably not to the extent that some would have liked, but Brewster really did make an effort to recruit MN pretty hard, and he definitely improved our walk-on program here which was pretty obsolete under Mason. The walk on program is hard for the state of MN because of all of the division 2 schools and division 1 AA schools, it is hard for some of these kids to turn down those opportunities, but yeah it would be nice if we could continue to get a big push from kids all over the state to walk on at the U.
