Golden Gopher Jameis Winston

To get a pulse of what FSU fans think of him, there is a post on reddit/r/cfb posted by a FSU fan titled: People of /r/CFB, today is the day that many of you, including myself, have been waiting for. Jameis isn't our problem anymore!

They're frankly glad he's gone and an NFL problem now.

The fact, that Hueytown Alabama's high school's team nickname is 'Golden Gophers', is a reminder of our former national stature and indicative of how far we have fallen. It's just unfortunate that Jameis Winston is why we are aware of it.

Hueytown High School is the home of the Golden Gophers. This unusual mascot has its own story. Football was introduced to Hueytown high school in the 1921, the same year the University of Minnesota was selected as National football champions. Hueytown is proud of this one-of-a-kind mascot! According to a December 13, 1977 Birmingham News article, “Hueytown, for instance, must be the only team in the state with such a woodsy animal as its mascot. (They) picked up that nickname for its athletic teams because of Minnesota’s success on the gridiron.” Like Minnesota, Hueytown gridiron ferocity is legendary.

Not sure what National Championship Minnesota won at 3-4 and 6th place in the B1G. Disgustingly, in 1921 Iowa actually was 7-0, won the B1G title and was retroactively awarded the co-National Championship by Parke H. Davis. 1921 was Coach Williams' last year, so maybe that's why they named the team after the Gophers?

I do like how they also adopted the current version of Goldy: https://www.facebook.com/pages/HUEYTOWN-HIGH-SCHOOL-FOOTBALL/137698166255164

Under Henry Williams from 1900 to 1921 the Gophers were 136-33-11, also one of the prominent offenses was known as the Minnesota Shift, invented by Coach Williams.

Not that I really care but surprised there isn't some copyright issue.

Think you might be right because that is 100% our version of Goldy Gopher with a different shirt on him. Gotta believe that if there was not some sort of arrangement in place with them to use the logo there have probably been some phone calls placed from our end.

If I was at the U and hadn't already agreed to it, I'd just make sure they made a formal request, then grant it. I see no down side to them using the logo especially with a different jersey.

Them mimicking our logo is to our advantage. I'd be willing to bet that we have no lost a single dollar because of this... more likely we have gained due to cognitive affects of priming and the like. No harm, no foul.

I remember Mankato West won a state title with the Wisconsin W on the helmet. Wisconsin said they had to take it off. Now it says "west"

Iowa made chaska take the hawk off their helmet too

So I take it the U is okay with Minnetonka's M.

In both cases I believe it was taking the border rivalry too far. I doubt there would be a problem if an in state school used them.

Not sure about the politics behind that.
Also unsure about the chaska situation.
I know for certain mankato west was told by wisconsin to either pay a fee west couldn't afford or remove it.
