Coach Kill’s brief responses to questions on today’s Sports Huddle:
1) Sid opened the showing asking Jerry Kill how he was doing following yesterday’s loss: Kill responded, sounding disappointed, “I’m doing alright.”
He then quickly turned his attention to the upcoming games with Nebraska and Wisconsin. He said yesterday’s game is over, and though they’re disappointed with their loss to the Buckeyes, they need to put it behind them and get ready for the Cornhuskers.
2) Sid asked if he had watched the Nebraska-Wisconsin game: Kill said he only saw a small portion of the game; however, he cited the outstanding game that Melvin Gordon enjoyed in the Badgers victory over Nebraska: “You don’t often see a running back gain over 400 yards in a game . . . Melvin is a great football player . . . (Gordon) is in the Heisman race.”
Kill recognized the Badger offensive line and the part they play in Gordon’s offensive production, “They’re good up front.”
3) Sid asked about adjustments that the Gophers made at half-time. Sid said the Gophers outgained the Buckeyes in the second half: Kill was not specific about any adjustments and that the changes that they made were “subtle things.” He said they tried to “shorten the game . . . didn’t make mental errors (as they did in the first half) . . . played better in the second half . . . When you play Ohio State, you can’t give up big plays (must play smart) . . . They’re a very good football team.” He said there were five or six negative plays that played a big part in the Gopher defeat.
Again, wanting to put the game behind them, Kill said they need to get ready and prepare for Saturday’s big game in Lincoln.
4) Sid said the Gophers held the Buckeyes to one of their lower offensive scoring outputs this season: Kill quickly responded, “If you’re going to beat a team like that, (you) can’t make mistakes.”
In preparing for Nebraska, after a defeat like yesterday, “Must have a short term memory . . . Must find a way to win on the road.” In making the last comment, Kill reminded the listening audience of the Gopher victory in the Big House against the Wolverines.
5) Sid, once again, came back to the running of Melvin Gordon against Nebraska. According to Sid, David Cobb should gain a lot of yards against the Huskers: “I hope your right,” replied Kill.
Kill stressed the importance of being prepared and playing error free football, if you want to win the fall battles on the gridiron, especially against quality opponents such as the Cornhuskers, “I look for a war (In Lincoln) . . . Must play error free football.”
6) Dave Mona cited the booming punts by Peter Mortell against the Buckeyes: Kill’s voice sounded with excitement when he discussed the punting of the Green Bay, Wisconsin senior: “He’s had a terrific year . . . We won the kicking game . . . Peter put us in great field position.” Kill then acknowledged the punting and good field position was overcome by big plays by the Ohio State offense.
7) Sid asked what they must do to get the team ready for Nebraska, after losing a game they could have won: Kill answered simply and succinctly: “Anytime you lose, you don’t like to look at the film . . . (Football) It’s a competitive business – you win or lose . . . When you get knocked down, you get back up . . . Must get ‘em ready for Nebraska.
”
8) Dave Mona asked if Drew Wolitarsky would be available in the Gophers bowl game: Kill was optimistic that Wolitarsky will be ready when bowl game preparations begin.
Coach Kill then made some quick comments about the team’s wide receivers and the absence of Donovahn Jones. Jones sat out the first two series of the game for disciplinary reasons and Jones was also sick, yesterday.
Kill quickly focused his remarks to the team’s freshmen wide receivers that are being redshirted. According to Kill, the young wide receivers could have helped the team. One redshirt that Kill mentioned that would have helped the team is Isaiah Gentry. The Cincinnati, Ohio wide receiver was injured at the start of fall practices. (Kill sounded confident about Gentry’s playing abilities.) Sounding very positive, Kill said the Gophers, next year, will have talent and depth in their receiving corps.
As to this year’s receivers, Kill said, “Logan Hutton can give us some minutes.”
(9) Sid said some are projecting the Gophers will be playing in this year’s Gator Bowl; however, he expects the team will see a better bowl game: Kill answered, “We’re excited about that . . . Must win the next two games . . . We’re still educating the kids how to win.”
Coach Kill wasn’t on for the full half-hour segment and, for the most part, he sounded quite subdued in his responses.
