Digging for historical trends?
It's been 10 years since the Gophers last began 2-0 in Big Ten play - the 2004 squad was 5-0 before stumbling to five losses in its final six games. Minnesota topped Northwestern 43-17 in the conference opener that year, giving it something in common with each of the previous six Gophers teams to open 2-0: beating the Wildcats.
1985, '86, '87, '89, '90 and 2003 all saw the Gophers start 2-0, and each time one of the victories was against Northwestern. Not since 1976 have the Gophers gotten to 2-0 without a win vs. Northwestern (wins were Indiana and Illinois).
