SIGNATURE WIN OVER STANFORD

Washington State began 2016 with a 45-42 loss to Eastern Washington — an FCS foe — and compounded it with a loss to Boise State in Week 2.

“Right now we have the atmosphere of a JC softball team,” Leach said in reference to junior colleges back in September. That’s what we are, just a JC softball team.”

The Cougars then reeled off eight straight wins — including their best, a 42-16 blowout over No. 16 Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. Falk had four touchdowns.

Washington State finished the regular season with consecutive losses to No. 11 Colorado (38-24) and No. 4 Washington (45-17). Both of those teams played in the Pac-12 title game.

WHAT ABOUT THEIR D?

The Cougars are known for their aerial assault on offense, but their defense is a big factor in the program’s improvement.

They’ve played really well on defense, I think that’s one of the biggest differences why they’re where they’re at,” Claeys said.

The Cougars are No. 56 in scoring defense at 27.2 points per game. Safety Shalom Luani is second in the Pac-12 with four interceptions this season.
