Gene Hackman and his wife found dead in their New Mexico home.

Wow that is shocking. Legendary actor. Hoosiers is my all time favorite movie, I’ve watched it a ridiculous amount of times over the years.

RIP Coach Norman Dale.

Suicides could have been a possibility but it said a dog died too, so carbon monoxide seems likely.

So many great roles and movies. Neither of these films got a lot of critical acclaim but Hackman crushed his character:

"No Way Out" was Kevin Costner's breakthrough role. I'll say nothing else about the film to avoid spoilers other than it's about espionage. A tremendous movie with great acting performances.

"The Quick and the Dead" with Sharon Stone, a young Leo DiCaprio and a relatively unknown Russell Crowe at the time. A fun movie and Hackman plays a great bad guy.

One if my favorites and I knew Costner was going to be a star then.

It’s worth a watch just to see Sean Young at her apex - Ooh, La, La🥰

As a kid in the 70s, while I remember seeing The Poseidon Adventure on TV, what brought Hackman to prominence in my world was his role as Lex Luther in Superman.

I still think that performance is the blueprint method to portray that type of comic book/super hero villain, in a comedic vein.

As details are trickling out, it's sounding as a really sad bizarre tragedy.

It's been reported at 95 Hackman was battling dementia.

Here's my potential theory, just a stab in dark:

Wife, who was his caretaker passed away due to an overdose, either intentional or accidental. Also might have been some other natural cause (ie heart attack).Hackman doesn't know how or is unable to react. Dog passes away, and is put in the closet.

Unable to care for himself (take his meds or have proper nutrition) some time later, a few afterwards perhaps, Hackman also passes away, potentially due to a fall, but at his age there would seem to be several logical circumstances.

I have no idea at all how it happened, just seems like a plausible chain of events. Sad.

TIL. He was the blind hermit in Young Frankenstein.

Cool Story the story of how he ended up in it; I remember when Mel talked about it previously to his death on a talk show.

Reflecting on Hackman's career, Brooksrecalled landing the actor for Young Frankenstein. He explained that he got connected with the star through "another Gene," Gene Wilder, with whom Hackman played tennis. Wilder informed Hackman that a role was available in the upcoming movie Young Frankenstein.

He added, "He said, 'Do you think Mel would let me play it? I’ve always wanted to do a comedy.' Needless to say, I was over the moon and he was perfect."

Though it sounds like the Wilder connection most directly brought Hackman to the project, the actor was also drawn to Young Frankenstein's comedy element. At the time that the spoof was released in 1974, Hackman was mostly known for his dramatic roles, including his Oscar-winning The French Connection and The Conversation. He was also a major star, so taking on a small supporting character was not the most obvious pivot.

Solid theory on a very sad situation. I will add these thoughts to your theory.

1) Their one dog was barking, so Gene put that dog in the closet (actually it was a kennel).
2) Their front door was slightly opened. Gene didn't know what to do, opened the front door and didn't close it all the way.
3) He fell in the bathroom and died from that injury.
4) The other two dogs had access to food/water and that is how they survived.

That seems logical on the dog in the closet.

Also possible being in a kennel, that it had been there even before anything happened to the humans. I wonder if an autopsy can get a range on when the dog passed away.

Very poignant tribute to Hackman at the Oscars by the legendary Morgan Freeman & 2 time co-star. It was a lead up for the In Memoriam segment.

Probably can say it every year, but wow we lost some heavy hitters, several icons.
