LOUISVILLE: Pitino seemed close to retiring a couple of years back and actually announced in 2011 that he'd walk away after the 2016-17 season. But that no longer seems likely. He's rejuvenated, coming off a national title and possibly headed for another. So retirement appears at least four or five years off, and, by then, it's difficult to project where some of his former assistants with Louisville ties might be. If Steve Masiello's career takes off, might the current Manhattan coach/former Cards assistant get a call? Smart would obviously also make a lot of sense here, and he'd have to listen. But the ideal plan, I think everybody agrees, is for Richard Pitino to succeed at Minnesota so that he could be in a reasonable position to succeed his father when the time comes. Whenever that time comes.

Go Gophers!!

What's it like to loose a coach due to success?

I bet we see at least 30 of these types of articles over the next 3-4 years. At least I hope we do because that means Richard will be succeeding. I may be naive, but I think Richard is more interested in blazing his own trail than taking the hand off from his old man. That doesn't necessarily mean he is going to stay at Minnesota forever, but I don't see him immediately taking the Louisville job once his dad retires.

I'm a Louisville grad/fan and I know zero people who want Richard Pitino to take over for his father. Myself included...

He's gonna have a hard first year at Minny. I wanna see if he's going to try and keep the ball in the Hollins boys hands.

Need to take a walk beyond your own block, kid.

Madtown,

You know who is going to start the rumor mongering, right?

It's going to be Doogie. After the first hint of success Doogie is going to bring up Pitino moving to another school non-stop. He's going to lie about destinations just so he can start talking about it, and he's going to get used by agents. Doogie will never, ever let the "rumors" die if Pitino has any success.

If you thought Doogie was awful when Tubby was coach (I sure thought he was awful), just wait to see what Doogie does when the young up-and-coming Pitino has some success. It won't be tolerable. People will lash out at Doogie, and Doogie will stand by everything he says. He'll be shameless about it, and we'll never know his "sources." As if we need to protect sources for basketball coaches (the whole practice of not naming sources outside of things like national defense is abhorrent).

So business as usual.

Can't argue with that. If Pitino succeeds here, you have to think he's Louisville bound.

It's an easy, mindless thing to write about. Connect "obvious" dots that give people something to read.

I'd think a guy in Richard's position would be of the mindset of "I am my own man. Love & respect my father, have great respect for the Louisville program, etc... but I am out here as me. If circumstances align such that I find myself in Louisville, that's how it'll happen.. but it's not a plan/expectation/thought.. I'm worried about my team now.."...

I just want to know when Gary Parrish will let CBS start using a picture from the last several years instead of one from a decade+ ago...

How about a picture of you GW?

Clearly Mr. Parrish doesn't consider Gopher fans to be among "everybody" ...

If you read comments from Illinois fans and base your opinion off of that, it's a very bitter feeling. For the longest time they have resented Bill Self for leaving Illinois for Kansas, and labeled him "$elf" or "Selfish" while making their snide remarks (apparently some of them felt he left for slightly more money and that he shouldn't have done that). But I find Illinois fans on message boards to be generally snarky and bitter to start with when it comes to most anyone from another team or with another team.

It will be easy to know if he has another mole on this new staff. It will be the coach that's an up and comer, or that he's been rumored to be in the running for the head job at xyz. It's a very common trade in cities, you given them a story or two and they toss your name out into the public.

Honestly, I wouldn't be too upset by this because it would mean Minnesota has had some significant success (ex, just one sweet 16 over the next 4-5 years isn't getting Richard Pitino the Louisville job). If the program is in the type of shape necessary for Coach Pitino to get the Louisville job, we will likely have some very appealing options to replace him. Maybe it would be current top assistant Dan McHale or possibly current assistant/former Gopher Ben Johnson, if not from the staff maybe Teague (he certainly still has the AD job if we're having success) can talk to Shaka again when the allure of staying at VCU might have worn off.

Personally, I agree with those who don't think it is a slam dunk that Richard Pitino would want to follow his father at Louisville. Those are going to be big shoes to fill, and expectations are going to be sky high for a program that isn't quite Duke/UNC/Kansas/Kentucky, but expects to win like those schools. If Richard carves his own niche and thinks he has a shot to win a championship at a program he built, versus going to his Dad's school and being expected to win a championship, I am not sure he would choose the latter.

I just hope the Gopher program is in the shape necessary for such speculation to feel real in 4-5 years.

I could've seen him as his father's successor had he stayed at Louisville, or even stayed at FIU or gotten hired by a mid-major. But I don't see him leaving a B1G school here unless the program is in bad shape, in which case, why would Louisville want him? The name can only take you so far.

Well we could just "take care" of Doogie lol, I know a guy ;)

I would be fine with this scenario. To be considered for the Louisville job, that would mean that he left the Gopher program in better shape than what he took it over in.

Bingo. Additionally, for any of us to kid ourselves and think that Pitino is destined to stay at MN if he has success is ludicrous. Could he be here for 15 years and become the next Tom Izzo, sure. Probable? No.

What do we consider "success" at MN? We are typically around a bubble team with some seasons of making the tournament and some where we just miss. I think Pitino has to consistently bring us very deep in the tournament in order to be looked at by Louisville. If that doesn't happen there will be a number of other young coaches with a history of success that will probably get the nod first.

If Pitino does bring us deep in the tournament consistently I certainly will not be complaining though.

what a worthless thread...purely speculation. We have bigger fish to fry today with reid and Looneys decision

If we build a practice facility the chances of us retaining a good young coach and staff will dramatically improve. Give them what they need to compete at the highest level and they should stay.

They shouldn't be that bitter considering Self's best year was his 1st year on campus and the fact Weber was within 5 points of a National Championship in his 2nd year.. I've heard Illinois fans say that Weber won with Self's recruits.. Self also had a lot of help from Kruger's recruits as well. Furthermore, Illinois fans should take a look at Weber now.. Big 12 coach of the year, Conference Championship, highest single season winning % in program history, etc... Self won a national championship and he deserves cred for that.. However coaching at Kansas provides a few (a ton) of perks that a Illinois or especially a Kansas State can't provide.

Illinois fans are idiotic.. But I'm biased because I've always liked Weber.

What do we consider "success" at MN?

If over the next 4-5 years we routinely finish in the top half of the B1G, routinely make the tourney and have 1 or 2 deep runs (e.g. Elite Eight). I could see that opening some eyes nationally and suddenly Pitino becomes the "it" guy.

I would be delighted if that happened - even if it meant losing him.

Then I'm assuming these same people would stay at their $40K job even after they get offered a similar job at a better company for $50K.

Gee I'm so glad we get to talk about this before he's even coached his first game. Louisville discussion is understandable. But the crap we'll have to hear every time an NC State, UVa or Alabama job opens gets annoying fast.

Get used to it, because Doogie will be on top of every "reliable source" in college basketball.
