This has been touched on lately, but what are the thoughts on Garin's role this year?
Obviously you want a DE to gain a year of strength and experience before throwing them in the trenches, but I would think there might be a place for a pass rusher on third downs, obvious passing situations, etc. Being that our DE's are all fairly unproven and Onwachi's down for a while, I think young Mr. Garin could be of use.

Garin

I thought Garin was going to be moved to linebacker? He seems sorta small for a DE, I always thought. However he looks damn tough on his Eastview High football films. Best of luck to him!!

Go Gophers!!!

He would be much better off red-shirting this season and get ready to compete next season. Garin needs to gain about 25-30 lbs to play DE for the Gophers next season. I watched him play several games last season and he will be a player to watch beginning next spring.

Garin

I certainly agree with the above post about Garin. He has to be 240-250 lbs. for a DE. or more. However he would be one very fast DE if that's where he stays, position-wise.

Isnt Garin

right now about the same size Steve Davis was during his frosh season?

Not an ideal scenario, but trying to offer perspective. Certainly Davis was not great against the run that year, but I remember Steve coming up with big sacks against Michigan when we won the jug...

One of the things I really liked about Garin when watching his film was that he could really move and his motor was always running. The kid seems to be very intense based on what I saw on his tapes. I agree, if he could add another 20 or 30 pounds of muscle, he would be a nice looking defensive end. If not, he certainly moves well enough, at least it appears, to play LB. In any case, he's one of the guys from last year's class I'm really excited about.

I was thinking the same thing. I don't think he can be an every down DE at 220, but if he can come in for passing situations and help the team as one of our top pass rushers, then he should play this year.

Also, we'll lose 3 (Cedric, Onwuachi, and Henderson) of our top 4-5 DE's next year so it wouldn't hurt to get Garin some experience now. He can pack on some weight this offseason and come back next year with some game experience ready to make a bigger impact.

This isn't up to date but when Garin committed I remember reading that Cosgrove was going to get him in to camp and see whether he could play OLB or if he would be better bulking up and playing DE. At the time he said that he would redshirt if he was going to bulk up to play DE and if not he probably wouldn't redshirt.

All of that is obviously subject to change and I haven't heard anything about him in camp yet.

I'd lean toward RS and bulk up at DE but it isn't based on any knowledge of camp or recent events. On a side note, KGM came in bulked up and much heavier than he was as a senior which is a pleasant surprise. To some extent KGM & Garin fill a similar role so KGM being bigger may lead Garin to OLB but I wouldn't be surprised to see both bulk up and play DE.

Garin = The next Flying Dutchman or whatever the hell nationality Garin originates from. Let's just call him Choo Choo Charlie.

Have you seen his picture on the roster? I think he should be called "The Pretty Boy"
