Gophers visit New Mexico
In their first season under former Wright State head coach, Mike Bradbury, New Mexico is 3-4. Bradbury replaced Yvonne Sanchez who was dismissed after finishing 17-15 (9-9 in the Mountain West Conference) in her fifth season.
THUD! I still consider last season’s Gopher 72-53 loss to the Lobos at Williams Arena the ugliest of the season. Minnesota led 16-12 at the end of the first quarter and then cringed in the corners. The Gophers were out rebounded 48-36 and it felt worse. Khadijah Shumpert led the Lobos with 27 points. Banham and Wagner combined for 38 points on 12-43 shooting. Shumpert has moved on; but Cherise Beynon who scored 14 points for New Mexico remains. In Beynon’s most recent outing, she scored 32 versus SMU.
Of note: Bradbury has picked up some transfers. 6’5” Richelle van der Keijl (from the Netherlands) is a grad transfer from Wright State. Van der Keijl is the Lobos leading scoring. Two other transfers who must sit out this season are Tesha Buck (Red Wing) from UWGB and Erica Moore from Purdue.
It’s not a typo: the Lobos have played New Mexico State twice and they have height in the post.
Wins: Fairleigh Dickeson, 85-56; New Mexico State, 84-55; SMU, 64-49.
Losses: @ Texas Tech, 69-58; Tulsa, 67-64; St. Josephs, 79-67; @ New Mexico State, 77-70.
Probable Starters:
Richelle van der Keijl: 6’5” C Sr. (15.7 points per game)
Chrise Beynon: 5’10” G Jr. (13.9/g)
Kianna Keller: 6’4” F Sr (3.1/g) 8.6 rebounds/game
Mykiel Burlson: 5’11” G Fr (10.6/g)
Jayda Bovero: 5’11” G Jr
Others:
Jaisa Nunn: 6’3” So C (10.9/g)
Other Stats: The Lobos are terrible free throw shooters 91-161 (.565) and average 15.9 turnovers per game. From three point range they are 49-168 and their opponents are 40-143. The Lobos average 70 points per game while giving up 64.6.
