One Mystery: What does former Vanderbilt Head Coach, Melanie Balcomb, actually do in her non-coaching role as "Director of Coaching Offensive Analytics"? Will other schools add non-coaching, coaching positions?

Another Mystery: How did Duke defeat the Gamecocks?

But the real star of the game was the Duke matchup zone defense, which forced 18 South Carolina turnovers and multiple lengthy Gamecock scoring droughts.

South Carolina (7-1) went 6-of-23 from 3-point range and struggled to get the ball inside to dominant All-SEC forwards A’ja Wilson and Alaina Coates.

“We did a great job of following the scouting report—getting in front, limiting their touches,” Chidom said. “We knew A’ja Wilson was strong with her left hand, [we were]trying to shut that down and just constantly be aware of where they were on the court.”

After Wilson scored seven of her team’s first nine points, the Blue Devils capitalized when the first-team All-American went to the bench.

Duke quickly went on its 9-0 spurt to end the quarter, punctuating it with Chidom’s first career 3-pointer to beat the buzzer.

The Blue Devils then stepped up their defensive intensity to start the second quarter, switching to the matchup zone defense that posed all sorts of problems for the South Carolina offense.

Duke used its length and activity to force 12 turnovers in the first half, as the Gamecocks often seemed confused on offense. That defensive pressure turned into 15 Blue Devil points on the other end, including a coast-to-coast drive by freshman Leaonna Odom following a steal.

Not a mystery: South Carolina defeating the Buckeyes:

The South Carolina Gamecocks used a balanced attack of defense and rebounding to down the Ohio State women’s basketball team 92-80 on Monday evening in Columbus, serving as the Gamecocks’ second win over the Buckeyes in as many years.

OSU presented more depth to the Gamecocks than what it had when they played in Columbia, South Carolina, a year ago, but the Buckeyes could not overcome the size and athleticism that the Gamecocks brought onto the floor.

South Carolina junior guard Kaela Davis led all scorers with 37 points on 10-for-21 shooting, and added 10 rebounds and five assists. Junior guard Allisha Gray also paced the Gamecocks with 24 points and seven boards.

“Our defense wasn’t up to par,” OSU coach Kevin McGuff said. “You’re playing a great team like South Carolina; if you’re not going to defend, you’re not going to have a chance to win.”

Despite the increased depth for the Buckeyes this year, OSU managed just four points off the bench.

“I think that was a lack of execution,” McGuff said. “They are going to make you pay when you don’t execute.”

With the match-up zone defense, the on-ball defender will play tight as if he was playing man-to-man. At the same time, the zone away from the ball will resemble "help-side" man-to-man defense. This creates one of the advantages for the match-up zone, as it may confuse the opponent as to what defense you are actually playing. The match-up zone also resembles a "switching man-to-man" defense, where the big men stay down low in the post and the guards stay around the perimeter.

This is what we should play all the time, because our defense gives too much cushion to the three point shooters, and our players end up lunging out at the three point shooters. I like the confusing the offense aspect too.

South Carolina is the team that most resembles a WNBA team, especially size-wise. Heck they might even be bigger than most WNBA teams.

Cuevas-Moore is their weak link on offense, but she can be disruptive on the defensive side.

I suppose the Gophers could try to outrun them and see how that works. Outrun them and you have to hit shots, because SC will out-rebound us fairly significantly. Duke beat SC using great defense and hitting shots. The defense aspect is probably not going to happen for the Gophers.

Here's a screenshot I took of the SC vs OSU game. Four of the OSU numbskulls in white are just watching the ball. That's "overrated" Kelsey Mitchell boxing out Aja Wilson. Wilson ended up committing an over the back foul, and she ended up sitting most of the first half. She's SC's most star player. OSU had SC on the ropes, but Kaela Davis had such a huge game for SC that it didn't matter that Wilson was neutralized. Davis had 37 pts, 10 reb, 5 ast. Davis is good but that was an unusual game for her.

Moral of the story: Box out Wilson every time, even if it isn't "your job". Get Wilson making frustration fouls and sitting on the bench and you give yourself a chance of winning the game.

This shows what kind of night Kaela Davis was having. She made this one from Banham distance. OSU was playing man-to-man and was pretty helpless to shots like this. Imagine if Davis was hitting shots like this against our zone defense? Yikes. Our zone defense won't get it done. Match-up zone sounds like a great idea, but I'm not sure our team is schooled in that or we would have already seen evidence of it.

Does South Carolina hit the 110 mark vs. the Gophers defense?

Last night they said the U was expecting to hear about Fernstrom this week ? We lose either way but score could be much closer with a legitimate center.

What do you mean "hear about"? She could join the team before the conference schedule?

Yes. The U appealed and Stollings was expecting an answer this week. Said she would play immediately if given the OK- no surprise there but now seems highly unlikely before Sunday.

If they did hear and Fernstrom can play, I see no reason for them to announce it advance.

Even if she were to miss the game with SC, it would be nice for her to get in a couple real games experience before the conference schedule begins.

So you're saying we're in trouble?

Wagner with three fouls in the first half? Maybe not the worst thing for her to be out of the game for a stretch...

Wow- shows how far behind the top 10 we are @ this point. They basically coasted the whole 4th quarter for a 98- 58 victory.

Streamed it. The girls played like a deer hitting the headlights. This team is not mentally tough and no one with Banhams swagger. Turned it off at half. This is a game I hope the girls can forget. To take a beating like that it can certainly deflate you

Kentucky and Arizona State tried to do us a favor by going to overtime and delaying the Gopher/Gamecock game's appearance on the SEC network. They failed. Apparently Stollings and Dawkins did not see Shades's screen grab of Davis shooting threes versus Ohio State. South Carolina went 16-33 from behind the arc.

Yes it was the third game in six days (two on the road); but it was pretty much a dumpster fire scorching players and coaches. Finally it turned into a "get'em to play together day" featuring six players with double digit playing time.

Starters:

Edwards
Starr
Bell
Wagner
Hubbard

Minutes Played:

39 Hubbard
36 Bell: 16 points
33 Wagner
31 Edwards
23 Tinjum: 11 points and mixed it up
18 Hedstrom (eventually Rebecca Lobo got so bored that she recounted the picture with Joanna story a second time) (and Charlie Crème made a long winded phone appearance).
8 Barnes
7 Starr
5 Brunson
