Road Test Along the Potomac
Minnesota travels to DC for a match-up with the Georgetown Hoya’s (4-3) in McDonough Arena. Georgetown is coached by James Howard (first year) who was promoted following Natashia Adair’s departure to Delaware. Adair led the Hoyas to back to back WNIT appearances.
Last season Georgetown finished 17-13 (9-9 in the Big East). In last year’s match-up at Williams Arena, Minnesota prevailed 68-60. Minnesota trailed at the end of the first quarter 14-13. In the third quarter the Gophers took a 57-40 lead before a Hoya comeback cut it to 5 with 1:33 remaining in the game. Carlie Wagner scored 21 points and Kenisha Bell posted a double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Taiye Bello made her first start. The Hoyas’ Dionna White, who returns this season, scored 18 points and made 5 steals.
This season, Georgetown is projected 5th in the Big East. Their most recent game was a victory at Florida International (White had 24 points and 13 rebounds and Cynthia Petke 18 points and 16 rebounds). Of interest to Gopher fans was the Hoyas win over Northwestern 55-54. Georgetown led 32-21 at halftime. But Northwestern fought back. With the score tied at 54, Georgetown’s Tatianna Thompson was fouled on a drive to the hoop with .5 seconds remaining. She made one of two free throws for the win.
