FSN"s Tyler Mason: I think MN needs to get Edwards and Maye more involved in passing

per Mason's Q&A:

Q: This might be the week we see guys like Berkley Edwards and KJ Maye break out a little more, don't you think? Assuming Streveler's the guy, I could see more of that bubble action getting it into those two guys' hands quickly to keep Streveler comfortable. -- Nathan, Moorhead, Minn.

A: As of now, it looks as if Leidner will be the starter, but you raise an intriguing point if Streveler is handed the reins to start the game. He's thrown just one pass -- a 12-yard completion to backup tight end Brandon Lingen -- in two career games with the Gophers, so he's certainly not battle tested. We really don't know what kind of an arm Streveler has. His accuracy in fall camp was iffy at times, but I was only able to see him throw in a handful of practices and scrimmages, so it was a bit of a small sample size. He doesn't possess a huge arm, so establishing the short passing game certainly could play to his strength.

In general, regardless of which quarterback is under center, I think Minnesota needs to get Edwards and Maye more involved in the passing game. Edwards caught just one pass in the season opener against Eastern Illinois, while Maye didn't have a catch -- let alone a target -- all game. We saw what Edwards can do when he gets the ball in space, as was evident by his long touchdown run in the opener. Maye possesses a similar skill, though he's not quite as fast as the redshirt freshman Edwards. But if Minnesota continues to struggle to pass the ball downfield like it has the first two games, getting its speedy receivers in space in the short passing game could be a recipe for success.

Q: Are the coaches trying to "hide" Leidner and his arm by not asking him to throw much? He only attempted 11 passes and they basically rode David Cobb all day against Middle Tennessee. It seems like teams will figure out that Minnesota doesn't want to pass and then will load the box and force them to throw. -- Michael, Duluth, Minn.

A: I don't think they were necessarily trying to hide Leidner this past Saturday, but the stat line of five completions and just 11 attempts is certainly concerning. I asked offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover about this on Tuesday. Was it a byproduct of the game that Cobb was having?

"I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that you have a lot of confidence in a guy and your turnaround and giving him the ball and he's churning out what he was," Limegrover said. "But . . . we don't want to just be relying on the run. We want to be able to throw the football."

That will be especially true against TCU, a defense that will surely be looking to stop the run first and force Leidner -- or Streveler, if he gets the nod -- to make plays through the air. Through two games, that's been an area of concern for the Gophers. Minnesota will need to get tight end Maxx Williams involved early and often, and perhaps get the passing game going with a few running back screens (like I talked about in my answer to the previous question).

Go Gophers!!

LOL I think the Minnesota offense needs to throw the ball better in general who cares who they are completing passes to as long as they are actually completing them. At this point I am concerned more about Williams and Jones getting touches than Maye. Edwards already gets touches in the running game. Gophers must be more balanced and provide at least the threat of a passing attack.

That's pretty much a no-brainer. Getting our two best athletes involved out in space opens things up offensively and takes pressure off the run game.

I would probably have swapped Jones for Maye in terms of playmakers to get the ball to because I am not sold Maye has what it takes to be a good WR at this level. Takes more then speed and so far all we really hear about him is how fast he is. All that aside though I think the most important guy to get the ball to is Maxx at this point, great things happen when he touches the ball but his catches per game average is still really low.

So one guy says we need to throw more to Edwards and Maybe and another guy says we need to throw to Maxxxxxx 8-10 times per game (when we only throw 17 times each game).

Jet sweep to Edwards, Maye, or Jones. Short passes to Maxx. Cobb up the middle. Get it done

+1. Nice.

On the positive side for them, if the Gophers lose, at least one of them will get to cackle & say "I was right."

I'm starting to very, very slowly lose faith in Kill. He does things like this consistently. He said no less than 5 times to the public that KJ had by far the best camp and that he looked forward to KJ making important contributions this year. Then, come game time, the kid is completely ignored. I like Jerry Kill and have really bought in to him. But I'm starting to sense he's kind of an exaggerator and doesn't have a good handle on things. He's hard to take at his word. Or, he says things just to hear himself talk.

Actually 17 was the high water mark. It was 11 last week. Maxx has 3 receptions and averages 28 yards per catch. It doesn't make sense to you he should be targeted more? If we throw 11 times Maxx needs more than two passes thrown his way and I believe that holds true if we pass 17 times too. That's what people are saying. Disagree? Plus get the ball to Jones and the other two waterbugs
Maye and Edwards because they can take it to the house on any catch. Spread the defense out. Give them something else to worry about. That's all.

With that kind of attitude, we'll never break the gopher curse

If this is on the heels of a 2-0 start and a running back putting up 225 yards, I can't wait to see what happens after we lose a game.

His full comment was definitely over the top but the point about Maye is valid. We keep hearing about him being so explosive and a potential weapon yet he has done next to nothing in his time with Gophers. Maybe it is the fault of the system not getting him the ball or maybe he just isn't getting open, either way I don't really get the hype around him.

The Horned Frogs IMHO are definitely going to stuff the run. But, I believe this is the game that we will see some new wrinkles with the Gophers offense or so I hope.

This game looms large for the Gopher's whole season.

I have written this before, and no one answered the question. Jones and only Jones should be running the jet sweep. Why?

Tomorrow's game should answer a lot of questions. There seems to be a fundamental disagreement between a lot of posters about whether, to compete against teams not named Eastern Illinois or Middle Tennesse State, we will need to be able to pass more and more effectively than we have so far. Tomorrow, we will see both how the coaching staff decides to use the passing game against an opponent that is not a non-conference gimme as well as what the result of that decision is on the scoreboard. Half of us are going to look really stupid come Sunday.

We've also heard how much ML has improved. Haven't seen it so far.

Really? I want to win every game, but to me this is the least important. It's good preparation for the B1G and hopefully the road experience pays dividends when we are in Ann Arbor at the end of this month.

I'm forced to agree with him. Our best, most explosive and diverse offense, came when Kill was on leave or up in the booth. We were very vanilla and predictable before it, and as equally such after, during the bowl game and the first two noncons. People say "he's not letting people know our do capabilities", he and Limegrover have been together 'forever', they laud that to everyone.. everyone knows what plays he runs. It's no secret, open up and let's go!
