In the next three weeks as we move closer to the start of the 2014 Gopher Football season, we here at The Daily Gopher will give a quick preview of the Gophers opponents. We finally have reached the Big Ten portion of our schedule! Next up is the opponent in the Battle for the Little Brown Jug, the Michigan Wolverines.

Name: Michigan Wolverines

Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan (She may or may not be of ill repute)

Enrollment: 43,710

Conference: Big Ten (East Division)

Notable Alumni: James Earl Jones (of course Darth Vader went to Michigan), Lucy Liu, Arthur Miller, Ann Coulter, Rich Eisen, Clarence Darrow, Gerald Ford, Tom Brady, Jim Harbaugh, Ari Gold

Sure, this is a difficult road game but I think it will be much closer than 31-13. Michigan was fortunate to catch us when we were down the last time we played. I believe we will give Michigan all it can handle and I'm thinking we surprise them and win this one.

Go Gophers!

You forgot Dr. Gregory House as long as you are going that direction.

Sawvel was interviewed a few weeks ago and took a lot of the blame for the loss last year in Michigan. He said he should've moved Vereen to corner earlier and that their CB depth just wasn't good enough with BBC out and Wells hobbled. If I remember correctly, Gardner wasn't as impressive as his numbers indicated that game and if our DB's made a few more plays on the ball it would've been a different story. Funchess will be the key this year. If we can contain him I certainly don't see them scoring 31 points and we'll have a chance to win a close, hard fought game at the end.

+1 - Thanks for the very interesting comment and insight from coach Sawvel. We often are not aware of the importance and impact of these type of decisions.

Their running game was beyond putrid last year. They lose their starting RB and their 5 star recruit Derrick Green has been a bust to this point. He weighed up to 248 pounds last year but has apparently cut down to 220 over the offseason. What that means is up in the air. Michigan is going through the dark times most helmet schools periodically endure. Ripe for the picking and I'm glad we play them early in the year. Whether hoke and Nussmeier can fix their confidence and motivation problems is a big question mark. I can almost smell the self-doubt.

I hope that you are correct. But until we beat them on a semi-consistent basis we are more likely to suffer from self-doubt than them.
