Fran McCaffery gets 7-year extension

It's a little early to be giving such a big extension/raise at this time, especially since it isn't until March when there is real competition to hire your coach away. But I like what he has done at Iowa to this point and I think he's a very good hire for them.

CBS Sports title was a little misleading

He's two years into a 6 year deal. What Barta did was give him a bump and added three years on the end.
He now has a 7 years remaining on his contract.

It is a new contract, though. Not quite as simple as adding three years and a simple pay increase.

The provisions are quite interesting - lots of monetary incentive for Fran to get the team to the NCAA quickly. Lots. Base + supplemental pay for each year has two schedules - one if they've made the NCAA tourney, one if they haven't.

Incentives for a good job on the court are decent as well - especially NCAA tournament wins.

I like the contract. Maybe a tiny bit heavy on the buyout, but not too bad.

Seven years?! Some felony homicides get less time than that.

A "bump"? Maybe I am mistaken, but I thought he was "only" making about $800K in his prior deal. Doubling one's salary is quite the "bump."

The $800k is a bad number.

His base + supplemental (i.e., "guaranteed" money) was increased only $150k or approximately 13% to $1.3 million.

However, if he gets them to the NCAA tourney, the increase next year and beyond jumps up considerably. Again, I really like some aspects of how the new deal was designed.

As of today, Fran is making pocket change compared to many Big Ten coaches, including Tubby Smith.

Fran is a really great coach for Iowa.

I used to really enjoy Iowa back in the Lute/ George R. era when I was in High School. I also liked the way Coach Davis won plenty of NCAA March games.

The Lickliter era wAs unwatchable, and even though they are a rival, it is great to see Iowa back as a potential force in in B10 CBB. McCaffrey? has this team playing tough, but open court basketball again, and the Licklighter era was horrible for everyone, and harder to deal with than even THE Dan Monson train wreck.

PS. I watched Long Beach State a few times last year, and if Monson had been able to get players like LBSU had last year into school academic wise, he would have been the next John Wooden at Minnesota.
