FR Safety James Manual

When I read the article it makes me think the SS is responsible for all the calls in the Cosgrove defense. Does that mean Theret was the one making the calls, and now Manual is trying to do it?

Another tidbit in that article:

Brewster said freshman running back Devon Wright is enrolled in school and is part of the team, but cannot practice until an issue with the NCAA Clearinghouse is resolved. Wright, from Coral Springs, Fla., will redshirt this season, the coach said.

Seems there was a reason he was so miffed when Marcus Fuller asked about him at the scrimmage news conference. Hope he gets this sorted out successfully like Marqueis and rejoins the team. A redshirt year is a good thing for him, IMO!

I like James Manuel and I hope this works out better than our last freshman safety starter...

That would explain the temporary break down in the second quarter.

We don't have anyone on the roster by that name.

Unless I'm mistaken I'm pretty sure Manuel is playing FS. In Cosgrove's scheme they're fairly interchangeable but Theret was always the FS as is Manuel. The FS has fewer man to man responsibilities and plays more centerfield.

Probably best if I follow the lead of the publications of dropping the free/strong in front of safety. I think you are right that cosgrove wants you to be able to play equally well. A good question for Cosgrove is who do you expect to making the calls this year roysten or theret (of course ask that if they both end up getting their spots back :D ).

I think you know who he's referring to

The particularly funny thing about this misspelling is that I don't think there's ever been anyone in the history of Planet Earth with the surname "Manual".

Coz said after practice on Tuesday that they didn't let Manuel play a lot of centerfield, last line of defense type roles. From my view, he was definitely the "strong" safety, even though MTSU doesn't use a TE so there was no true "strong side" of the offense.

Nice to hear that Manuel, while nervous, is confident enough to make calls. We need Theret back in there for USC, but its great to see Manuel getting this experience now.

Sidenote: I'm really enjoying these player write-ups in the Strib, and combine those with some of the post-practice intervies on FBT, and I feel like I'm really getting to know this team.

Fun fact for the day

BJ Upton's actual first name is Emmanuel. His nickname BJ is short for Bossman Junior, as his father has always been referred to as Bossman.

I wish my nickname was Bossman. Or Supathick.

When I found this out last year I about pissed myself. First off, who is referred to as "Bossman"?? Second, to take that and be called Bossman Junior is even more hilarious.

Nope not the case at all. You are correct however that Kyle is the SS. The tell is the SS has the boundary (short) side of the field and the FS has the field (wide) side of the field. On passing downs (3 receiver sets) the SS will play deep and the FS (Gophers don't bring in a 5th DB or nickle) will play the role of corner and cover the slot receiver. This can be confusing because in other defenses (Vikings) the SS comes down to help support the run while the FS is 15 yds deep.
