Minnesota: How much progress will the Gophers make in coach Jerry Kill's second year?

Minnesota faces a daunting Big Ten schedule, so progress might not necessarily be defined by victories. The Gophers play at Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois and Nebraska. Home games include Northwestern, Purdue, Michigan and Michigan State.

Still, there are several notable areas the Kill (pictured) must clean up in order for his team to compete. Defensively, Minnesota allowed 31.7 points per game last season on the way to a 3-9 record (2-6 Big Ten).

If there is an encouraging sign defensively, it's that the Maroon beat the Gold, 3-0, during the team's spring game.

On offense, quarterback MarQueis Gray must demonstrate more consistency. Last season, he passed for 1,495 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also rushed for six touchdowns. Minnesota likely will go as far as Gray will take them in 2012.

Go Gophers!!

" As far as Gray will carry them" That really is the bottom line.

Agreed. this more than sums up our team for this year. i'd maybe add after the word them "given the defense doesn't make it an insurmountable mountain to climb."
