per Fox Sports:

Washington State head coach Mike Leach is without question a creative person. When asked about the College Football Playoff format, Leach brought his A-game to the table.

Leach doesn't just want to see the College Football Playoff expand, he wants to bring it to March Madness levels. "Sixty-four," he said when asked by ESPN how many teams he'd put in the field. "Why not?"

According to Leach -- who has discussed the 64-team idea before -- this is how it could work:

-- Reduce the regular season to 10 games

-- Round 1 of the playoffs is a home-and-home series

-- The existing bowls would cover the other games, and the champion would be required to play 16 games -- one more than Ohio State and Oregon played last season.

“It’s remarkably easy,” Leach said. “If you had 64, there wouldn’t be a lot of debate. ... It would be indisputable that it was settled on the field and somebody that wins playoff games accordingly deserves to be champion and there’s no debate. It would be great fun to watch -- just like it is at all the other levels.”

Go Gophers!!

If it was actually done like it was at the other levels each conference champion would get an automatic bid, including the bad ones. And there would be a small number of at larges to round it up to a number they like.

The D3 tournament is 32 teams even thought Whitewater and Mt Union always play for the title.

Even with 64, the only way WSU makes the playoffs is if there is a nit football tourney.

How many division 3 conferences are there?
I know the number of teams is like 245 or something.

So the d1 equivalent would probably be less than 32.

I think there is something around 25 conferences and about 300 schools.

I would love to see a 16 team tournament but would take 8.

I would love to see 12 where the top 4 get a bye and a home game. 5-8 get a home game. 9-12 are in.

If it got to 12 I would like to see all conference champions get in. Including non P5.
Including all conference champions would create negative incentives to form superconterences. It would also ensure the value of every regular season conference championship.
It would also allow for 3 at large bids for independents and leagues who are better than other leagues.
Take the top 3 non conference champions. Take the 9 conference champions. Rank them 1-12.

That is in essence what every level of football does except D1 college football.
