FOX 9: Why Pete Najarian Wants to be AD

We don't need to be adding any sports.

At least this is a guy Sid endorsed who wants the job...

It's a no go as far as I'm concerned though because of the hair. Too Jesse Ventura like...

It should be him, but it won't be. The status quo and mediocre at best results are what Minnesota is all about.

If Sid wants him, that is good enough for me.

get rid of male gymnastics, it's not a high school sport so it has no connection to the state. Although I would rather see men's soccer than Lax, but both could be good here

What is wrong with the local media? Can we expect a two-part interview on Fox 9 with Phil Esten, Sean Frazier and Gene Taylor? I highly doubt it. But why Najarian and nobody else?

And Fox 9 isn't the only media outlet to give Najarian time on the air.

I know Najarian is campaigning for the job and making himself available to the media. But that's not uncommon -- individuals and organizations try to get themselves in the news all the time. I can't figure out why they're all choosing to promote Najarian.

Do you really think Esten or Frazier would grant such an interview? Of course not. Najarian can because I'm sure CNBC doesn't care.

I think you answered your own questions. Highly unlikely that anyone with an existing job in athletics is going to go all out to campaign for the job like an outsider can do. If Najarian doesn't get the job, he goes back to what he's been doing with little harm done and maybe some benefit from the increased visibility. The others would have to slink back to their current jobs and start doing major damage control.

This isn't the era of Walter Cronkite anymore. Local news, especially outside the main 10:00 and 6:00, is less about journalism and more about filling time with anything that seems news worthy.

Fox 9 process was probably something along the lines of:

football related check
local check
topical check
easy to produce because person came to us check
person is capable of speaking on a tv show check
Homegrown angle check

Balance that with the fact that he wants to script entire interview for self promotion. Easy choice to make for Fox 9. That interview was more scripted than an episode of Duck Dynasty. Whatever keeps the viewers "Happy, Happy, Happy."

If any of the other candidates was willing to put in the time I'm sure they would fill more segments with them as well. Goetz has had plenty of media time( mostly radio ) as well talking about wanting the job. The other people we are trying to woo here, not the other way around.

It probably helps that Beyonce will be playing at TCF soon.

That's probably true, although it does not appear that Esten or Frazier are working too hard to deny their interest. But Fox (and 1500, and KFAN and others who have interviewed Najarian at length) should say, "We offered to interview Esten and Frazier, but our calls to were not returned." That's a pretty common way for a reporter to say, "Hey, at least I'm trying to give the impression of balance and fairness."

There are many people the media could talk to about the troubles at the U, if that's what they want, without continually promoting the same AD candidate.

That would involve production and working to create content. That could happen, but when someone like Najarian comes to you with prepared content that is zero work for you it's just easier, plus your banking that by granting him your platform your looking for quid pro quo for him to keep coming to you with content if he gets the job. I know your looking for a glimmer of journalism in an entertainment industry, but if the media in this town had any ethics they wouldn't have buried our last AD harassing female reporters until he finally harassed someone who spoke up.
