Former NBA center Shawn Bradley suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed, according to a statement released on his behalf by the Dallas Mavericks.

On Jan. 20, Bradley was struck from behind by an automobile while riding his bicycle a block from his home in St. George, Utah. He underwent neck fusion surgery and has spent the past eight weeks hospitalized and undergoing rehabilitation.

"With his wife Carrie at his side around the clock, and supported by an amazing team of rehabilitation specialists and family, Bradley is in good spirits," the statement read, in part. "He plans to use his accident as a platform to bring greater public awareness to the importance of bicycle safety."

F'k. Hate seeing stories like this, doing an enormous amount of bike riding myself. There was a group of about a dozen or so riding south of Vegas around New Year's, some type of delivery truck or something, driver was on meth and something else I think, ran into the pack, killed 5 of them. I knew a few from the triathlon club.

I don't know how some people ride very close to traffic at all, but I guess many don't have a ton of alternatives. I'm fortunate enough that I don't ride a LOT where there are many cars, a lot of my miles are through Lake Mead National Park where people aren't going 70mph, but it's always in the back of your mind.

Part of the problem with bicyclists is that there is such a wide variety of riders and they all act differently, obey the laws differently, etc. The hard-core "roadies", guys who are strictly bike riders and do a lot of riding and racing, are the worst, complete assholes usually, and think they have more rights and privileges than they really do. The triathlon crowd are generally really nice people and are more considerate of everyone else around them. And the recreational riders that don't ride much and may not be aware of some of the protocols and courtesies are all across the board and you never know what you're going to get with them, especially if they aren't wearing helmets. Gotta give them a huge amount of space because you never know what the f'k they're going to do at any time.

Hate to preach but it's probably appropriate given the thread; if at all possible, give cyclists a couple of feet if you can. The difference between 2-3 feet and 5-6 feet, especially at high speeds, is greatly appreciated!!

I assume every driver is texting, so I try to stay on the bike path as much as possible.
 

I got hit by a car while on a bike when I was seventeen, long before helmets. I went flying and, fortunately, landed right where I was supposed to land, which was on my ass. I was pretty bruised and shaken up, but no broken bones or permanent injuries. Very, very lucky.

Regarding Ogee's comments, I do see bikers on the road who look pretty cocky and must think they are riding in an invisible protective bubble. Riders who are in the middle of the lane are asking for trouble from careless, impatient or mentally unstable drivers.

I am a runner, but have thought about moving to biking as I get into my 50's and older (currently 39) to ease my joints. There are lots of paths around where I live, but you still see the hardcore bikers riding on the road (as it's smoother than the paths). The thing that prevents me from taking up biking now is seeing stories like these, knowing how little many pay attention on the road. I see the bikers using the road (and not the path), and think to myself, WTF dude, the person behind me may be binging Joe Exotic on his phone- use the path for your own safety. Yes, you have the right to use the road, but that doesn't make it smart.

I agree... to an extent. There are parts of the bike path that I generally try to avoid, out of respect for the foot traffic. I'm not a recreational rider, typically ride around 160-180 miles per week, and I'm generally moving about 20-30mph. It's been my experience that can really freak out the couple out for their daily walk, a family with small kids, elderly people out walking, people walking dogs, etc.

But in the area I ride, that's a pretty small portion of the path, so outside of the areas prone to heavy foot traffic, hell yes, I'm using the path!

More than likely he will walk again and the story is a float to assist in settlement damages. Similar to Tracey Morgan getting rear ended by the Walmart truck.
 

Here's an article on "How to choose your perfect cycling jersey" and it gets it 100% wrong. The main picture in the article shows a light blue top with black shorts. That color combo blends in perfectly with a blue sky and black pavement. Pick a color that makes you visible - stay away from light blue, gray or white. Bright yellow, orange or bright red are much easier for people to see. Same for your helmet and gloves.
