Former Gophers DC Greg Hudson on Kill & Staff: “They’re really doing a great job"

per Sid:

Hudson had coached at Cincinnati before joining the Gophers, and he said that hire by Mason was one of the better things to ever happen to him. He also still knows a little bit about how the Gophers are doing these days, since he’s back in the Big Ten.

“They’re really doing a great job,” he said about coach Jerry Kill and his staff. “They have it coming back around, and they’re all excited about their defense. They’re almost as good as that ’03 and ’04 defense. They’re not there yet, but they’re getting there.”

Hudson also said that he considers himself somewhat lucky, since he’s been at only four different schools in the past 14 years.

“I’ve only moved about every four years,” he said. “It hasn’t been one year or two years, it has been a situation where one was even a five-year stint [at East Carolina]. I have been lucky that it hasn’t been tough at all. But I was excited and determined to get back to the Big Ten in some capacity.”

Go Gophers!!

Weird, I don't remember our 03 and 04 defenses being that good, I would say that 99 defense was the best one

I don't think they were that good either.

In 2003 they gave up 30+ points five times. In 2004, it happened three times. Last year our defense gave up 25 points or more just twice, and that was with a much worse offense than either of those years.

I was fairly young 03-04 so I don't remember those seasons a whole lot, but I think I'd rather take last year's D over those years'.

When Mase had a really good DE, his Ds were pretty good, otherwise they were fine on first and second down but any decent team could complete a pass on third down often enough to beat us.
If his staff found half the dbs that could really play the way this staff has done so far, we would have been consistently good.

Hudson did a good job, I can't remember exactly why he left but I seem to remember he wanted more security than Mase thought he should get.

The 1999 defense had an average 16.3 pa/game. That I think was their calling card. I could be wrong but the 1999 defense was rated inside the top 15 in the nation.

If the 2014 Gophers can match that and establish less than 18 points/game we can win a lot of games.

The 1999 defense was tied for 8th in the nation in points allowed (2nd in BT).

For comparison, the 2013 defense was 25th in pts/game (4th in BT), the 2004 defense was 39th (6th in BT), and 2003 was 35th (6th in BT).

Last year's defense was very consistent as far as points allowed. In 11 of 13 games, they allowed between 10 and 24 points. In today's game, when you do that, you give yourself a good chance to win every game.

Agreed. He has a very selective memory. If by defense, he meant our time of possession on offense keeping our defense off the field, then yes, it was great.

Mr. Hudson forgets that the '03 defense is the one that gave Michigan that awful game. There were 7 NFL players on the offense and ZERO on defense. That is the worst collapse I've ever seen by a defense. PLEASE don't compare our D to that bunch.

You can blame Hudson for it or consider it an epidemic with the Mason era staff (I consider it the latter), but Hudson didn't have a ton to work with on those defenses. I thought he was a pretty good coach but they had no serious pass rush, resulting in constant 3rd down issues.

I can recall Mason moving good athletes over routinely from defense to offense. Kill's staff has actually done the opposite.

That 2003 defense also made Jim Sorgi look like the second coming of Peyton Manning. Gophers got torched for about 450 passing yards in that Axe game. However, what saved them was the was the ability to get timely turnovers.

"...selective memory..." runs rampant on college football web sites. For instance, on this board, while so many of you trash the defenses that played Michigan to close to a stand off in winning 1 and losing 2 very close games in 2003 through 2005, Coach Kill's defense and offense (he wants to use the offense to keep the defense off the field, you do realize) are 0 for 3 against some less than stellar Michigan teams and they have been outscored 135 to 26 in those 3 games.

You praise Coach Kill's defense and yet the outcome has been so incredibly one sided in those three games. Every once in a while we must look at the outcomes and the statistics before we make such emphatic comments, don't you think.

And, perhaps Coach Kill needs to move some of his defenders to the offensive side... (***wink***wink***)

Quite obviously, the offense needs to pick it up. However, my Golden Gopher's Defense has not shown up for any of the Michigan games under Coach Kill SO FAR. Hopefully 2014 will be the year where the defense gets it's back up, shows up and does something in Ann Arbor. This game (other than the game with the stinking badgers) is my KEY game of the 2014 season. Both the offense AND the defense need to show up in the Big House in 2014. It will be the first REAL test for my Gophers in 2014. This game will tell us whether we contend or just pretend.

Coach Kill is the greatest, maybe the best Gopher coach since Murray Warmath... but he needs to have his team in Ann Arbor and ready to win in 2014!

Yes - Routinely. Like the current Indiana approach. Personally I like Kill's approach better. IMO, trying to outscore everyone by putting all your talent in one side of the ball is not a way to build a consistent winner.

I don't know what Coach Kill should do. In addition to being outscored by Michigan so badly, the stinking badgers have outscored my Golden Gophers in Coach Kill's 3 games by a score of 100 to 33. I don't know if he should take more players from the offense to beef up the defense...or maybe start taking some defensive players to try to beef up the offense.

Perhaps what he needs to do is to have some of his very BEST players play both offense and defense. Back when Murray first arrived here the players played both offense and defense. Same for Bernie Bierman. What the heck, the way the better teams in the conference are scoring on the defense and holding the offense down, why not give it a shot? (***wink***wink***...or maybe NOT ***wink***wink***) IF you can't beat 'em with the current system and conventional wisdom: try something that is legal, but outside the box... Conventional wisdom is moving rather slowly. Beat the stinking badger NOW!

Let's actually try building a fundamentally good football team based on intelligent athletic players. If that is outside the box, I am all for it. If it is not, then outside the box is the same thinking that got us Brew, and I could not stand another four years of that nonsense.

Why don't you send Jerry Kill an e-mail and tell him yourself. I am sure he could use some of your astute advice. Babble, babble, babble. You really are Chance aren't you.

I won't defend the 2003 defence but will note there were at least two D players who had significant NFL careers Reid and Montgomery.

In being outscored by the Corn/Blues 100 to 33 combined in the last three meetings...

They certainly couldn't defend screen passes to Chris Perry.

oops...make that 135 to 26. That 100 to 33 was the advantage the stinking badger had in the past three games.

just what the hell has the Kill Era defense been defending against Michigan? I fully support Coach Kill, but, come on people. Why should you bash the great kids and the coaching staff on that 2003 edition of the Golden Gophers without being honest enough to compare that team that took an excellent Michigan team to war, battled toe to toe and for a three year period (2003, 2004 and 2005) culminating with a Gopher win in the Big House in 2005 to what we have experienced since that point in time. I will NOT sit idly by while you totally biased and totally lacking in common sense people bash the players and coaches who were the last bunch to be competitive with Michigan...at home and in the Big House.

I am hoping Coach Kill can be competitive with Michigan in 2014. Up until this point in time, during his three competitions with Michigan it has been a total mismatch in Michigan's favor. I want to compete with and defeat Michigan. I want my Golden Gophers to make this a rivalry trophy game. I want very much for Coach Kill and his Staff to have some success against Michigan...and to stay competitive and beat iowa at least 50% of the time and more than anything I want Coach Kill and his staff and team to beat the stinking badger NOW!

But I will NOT silently read some of your biased, nonsensical comments about that 2003 team. I am a big fan of Coach Kill and what he is trying to accomplish. I wish him only the very best. Winning 4 Conference games in succession in 2013 was a fantastic accomplishment. Now he needs to add wins against Michigan and the stinking badger. I want him to succeed enough so that an honest comparison between HIS defenses and the defense of that 2003 team can be compared. Right now, NO comparison can be made. The 2003 Gopher Defense was not good and was not deep. In Kill's 3 goes against Michigan, his defenses have been horrible and also not deep. Yet, you bash one and praise the other. And, until Coach Kill has my Golden Gophers playing toe to toe with the Corn/Blues in the Big House and in TCF BANK STADIUM, That 2003-2004-2005 period of time was the last time my Gophers showed up against the Corn/Blues. I am damn proud of that bunch of Golden Gopher Players and the coaches from that era for making the game for the JUG a meaningful game. Until my Golden Gophers can do that again for a three year period, THAT was the standard for that trophy game since the early 1960's. Maybe you guys don't believe me, but just go back and check out the record books. The final scores will tell us all there is to know. The record book tells us the way things really have been. Until Coach Kill gets it done against Michigan and the stinking badger, don't even try to rip the last group of players and their coaches who had any kind of success against Michigan and that rotten, stinking badger.

But I will NOT silently read some of your biased, nonsensical comments about that 2003 team.

Pointing out that the 2003 defense was the reason Minnesota couldn't finish higher than fourth in the Big Ten with the nation's fourth-ranked offense is not biased or nonsensical. It's reality. Sorry.

The 2003 Gopher Defense was not good and was not deep.

How dare you "bash the great kids and the coaching staff on that 2003 edition of the Golden Gophers"?

...don't even try to rip the last group of players and their coaches who had any kind of success against Michigan and that rotten, stinking badger.

Hypocrite.

This pretty much sums up my feelings about your babbling.

No skin off my a$$, fool. Knock yourself out. You're hereby invited to just do what ever it is you try to do. Show the people exactly who you are, what you are and how you are. Be my guest! Attach yourself to my posts ALL the time...wait, you do that already. But, in the end, anything you do is NEVER enough killjoy. You are totally inadequate at even trying to attach yourself to my posts.

And, in the end, it will be the Big Ten Record that we will have to discuss. I just LOVE Big Ten wins and Big Ten losses also tell a story all their own.

You are a pretty damn funny little fool killjoy. Nothing you say or do changes anything. But, thanks for the warning. That was a warning, wasn't it?

Mud in your eye if you get too close though...Now, I'm off without a care in the world. Life is so very, very good!

You are still being such a cheapskate. It is time for you to make a contribution to GOPHERHOLE. Let's see your name up there on the donor list. Don't try to use this site to plug some other site. That is pretty low, killjoy. Give THIS site some financial backing!
