Kill showed up.
"He didn't talk. He just watched and listened and saw how we felt about Murray, and from then on, he embraced the Warmath guys, more than the other coaches who had been here," Carter said.

-- Kill personally raised much of the $76.5 million to date for the Gophers' $166 million Athletes Village project, which will break ground with a ceremony Friday at the Bierman complex that houses Kill's office.

"In my opinion, this is part of what happened to Kill, (him) getting worn out," Carter said. "For the last year, Kill was out every night. Someone wanted him to speak -- he's in northern Minnesota, he's in Crookston, he's in Rochester. He's on the go all the time. He was doing (fired athletics director Norwood Teague's) job, I think."

DON'T PRINT THAT

-- University of Minnesota graduate T. Denny Sanford, a philanthropist who six years ago donated $6 million toward construction of the Gophers football stadium and after whom the school's "M" Club Hall of Fame is named, felt awful about Kill having to retire for health reasons. The university has cultivated Sanford for help with the Athletes Village project.

"Jerry's a good guy who worked his butt off," Sanford told the Pioneer Press on Wednesday. "I've probably gotten closer to him than any other coach. I just love the guy. But it is what it is.

"Now the university's really got a mess -- no athletics director and no head (football) coach."

Despite Kill leaving as coach, Sanford said there still is some good news.

"Thank God he's still alive and can concentrate on his health now," Sanford said. "That's the most important thing."

Kill's retirement won't affect Sanford's feeling about his alma mater, he said.

"The university is near and dear to my heart," he said. "They'll do well, with or without Denny."

Charley Walters: Jerry Kill had been struggling, friend says

Carter and Kill meet weekly to discuss football and life, not necessarily in that order. When Kill didn't show up for their regular meeting at Kill's office Tuesday, Carter had one immediate thought.

"Seizures," he said.

Kill's bouts with epileptic seizures have been well chronicled. Among his issues have been trying to slow down his mind, which constantly races because that's his personality. It's been difficult to keep under control; he has tried meditation to quiet his mind.

"He's a tough little guy, and a good guy," Carter said. "He's a battler; he's not a quitter."

Because he didn't want to give in to his condition, on his own, Kill, 54, tried switching up his epilepsy medications a couple of weeks ago.

Carter advised against it.

"Don't do that, Killer, without the doctors' advice," Carter told him.

"But he wasn't thinking as clearly as he wanted to, he wasn't as sharp as he felt he could be," Carter said.

Eager to improve his thought process, Kill decided to quit taking one of his three medications. But that led to sleep deprivation. And more seizures.

"Pretty sad," Carter said. "I feel bad for him."
