Former Gopher assistant Saul Smith lands on Texas Tech's staff as Video Coordinator

Caught a couple of minutes of the TT game. Saul sat on the bench and looked to be every bit the coach he was at the U. I have a feeling he's more then a "Video Coordinater".

He was probably just taking on a bigger role for that exhibition game, as Tubby wasn't there due to his mother's death.

Who cares, I'm sure he's plenty qualified to be a video coordinator. Plus with Tubby, it doesn't matter who the assistant's are, they don't do anything

Why do I care??? Because we just paid that kid for 6 years of assistant coaching and he is only qualified (or as you put it, plenty qualified) as a video coordinator at Texas Tech.... Tubby's video coordinator while he was at the U is an assistant coach at a JUCO this year.... Quite sure he is not getting paid the kind of ching that Saul made the past 6 years despite having the same skill set....

I just started watching it dvr'd. No one in arena. Condolences Tubby and his family. I know he has a lot of siblings. She must have been something special.

Both Richard Pitino and Saul Smith are sons of well known coaches.

Hard to believe though that Saul has actually played college basketball where Richard did not, and Saul is three plus years older than Richard, yet is still living under his day's shadow.

Saul must not have the skills or personality to interview out there. Richard has certainly advanced his career where Saul has not.

Pitino is white and Saul is black. Pitino has had a meteoric rise to being a head coach. I can't think of a single black coach that has had such quick rise. AD's are much more likely to give a job an up and coming white coach, than one who is black. Tubby didn't even get his first head coaching gig until the 90's.

Shut up

Using the race card in your argument means you are racist yourself.

btw, Nolan Richardson seemed to do quite well at Arkansas.

Your statement is unproven and it's also pretty clear that Richard has more chops than Saul. However, my guess is that if someone did a statistical analysis of the head coaching hires under the age of 35 at both the D1 and D2 levels it would support your assertion.

I don't think that you played the "race card" or that you are a racist. Like any other industry, there is a "network" and the people who do the hiring are more likely to hire through that network.

The big difference between the younger Smith & Pitino, is that Pitino has coached under coaches that weren't relatives. Smiths only assistant positions have been under his father & brother.

Jeff Capel? Or are we excluding Duke grads from this exercise?

To try this argument with Saul Smith as your example shoots your whole original point to caca. Saul Smith is the son of a well-respected head coach and by now he should been able to establish himself separately from Tubby if he had the goods; there are positions all over the place in D-1 basketball and black coaches are most well-represented in college basketball amongst all the major sports, I imagine (excluding perhaps the NBA). Instead, Saul's been riding on coattails and getting himself on the police ledger.

shaka smart is laughing at this post.

Yeah, that poor guy had to wait until the ripe old age of 40 to get that first D-I head coaching gig. The humanity.

John Thompson III is also the son of a hall of famer. Thompson III got his first head coaching job at Princeton at age 33 and actually had less coaching experience when he was hired than Pitino did when he was hired at 29 at FIU.

Shaka Smart was 32 when VCU hired him.

Sydney Johnson was 33.

Tony Barbee was 35.

Cuonzo Martin was 38.

To piggyback on TJ and Coolhand's spot-on work. ...

Jeff Capel (as Coolhand pointed out) was 27 when he was hired at VCU.

Bruiser Flint was 31 when he was hired at UMass.

David Henderson was 36 when he was hired at Delaware.

Someday (we all hope), your comparison of Richard Pitino to Saul Smith as coaches may go down as the most ridiculous, foolish, outrageous post ever seen on these hallowed Internet pages!

Race is probably involved, but Saul will never get a head coaching job anywhere at any level unless he sever's ties with Tubby and goes out on his own. No one is going to hire someone that doesn't have an identity of his own, he could have strong influences but he has to create his own set of beliefs. My guess is that is something he doesn't desire.

Well Pitino did land a job at a BCS school fairly quickly. I don't think it's any secret that black assistants have to toil away on the benches for much longer to get a head coaching gig than most white coaches. Of course, there are exceptions you can point too, but in general this is true. You're just not gonna find too many young black guys getting a BCS job so young. Vince Taylor has been an assistant under the greatest minds in basketball and still can't catch a break. It's all about networking, who you know, etc. that makes a big difference. And most AD's are white guys and they will likely take a chance on a young white coach than a black one if they choose between the two. I'm not knocking Pitino at all...God bless him, he may be a world beater.

Keep in mind that Pete Garcia hired Isaiah Thomas one year before he hired Richard Pitino.

That game wouldn't have been a sellout at Hopkins HS.

The only way Saul will never be a D1 HC. There's a reason Tubby keeps Saul around. He needs to keep a close in eye on him. Saul has a distructive personality. Tubby keeps him around to try to keep him out of trouble. Using race to compare Saul and Richie is beyond laughable.

This is not correct. He was an assistant at Tennessee Tech under Mike Sutton for 3 seasons.

What else ya got?

While I didn't necessarily agree with the comment you're referring to, your response is very inaccurate and ignorant.

Maybe they were not "judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
