You're right.

He'd probably be the first one saying it himself. Does anyone think that it's his natural position, or a position he even truly wants to play? And most importantly, if we want to win...does he have a choice?

It's pretty obvious that if we had ANYONE else that Tubby felt was a suitable PG, they'd be playing the PG spot. And it's painfully obvious that we don't. For those clamoring for any of the freshmen, it's obvious that Tubby doesn't trust them enough yet to play them there. As much as you may want Tubby to heed your advice, I'll trust his judgment in that he sees these kids play every single day, and knows their limitations.

Last night Hoffarber played as the sole ball-handler on the floor for 95% of the game against a funky 1-3-1 zone that has given us problems for 5+ years when we had true PG's on the floor, as well as multiple guards that could actually handle the ball.

He had 20 pts, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, and 4 turnovers on 5-10 shooting in 38 minutes. Playing PG for the first time in his college career without a single ball handler on the floor, I'd say he did a pretty decent job.

There are many on here that said not only would he not play any meaningful minutes for the Gophers, but also some that said he shouldn't have even gotten a Gopher scholarship.

Here we are, 4 years later: Hoffarber has undoubtedly worked his tail off to improve his game more than most of us thought possible 2-3 years ago. He's our team captain leading the #16 team in the country in scoring & assists, and is now forced to move to a position he's never played before in college because anyone else that could potentially play the PG spot has transferred, is hurt, or isn't capable of playing the position for extended minutes right now.

And yet people are railing on him? For those critics, what would you suggest we do?

I'm sorry for the rant, but after reading through that 3 page thread on it, I felt we may want to take a step back, look at our pretty dire situation, and recognize our lack of options at the moment.

Silence sometimes speaks volumes, SGL.

Agreed. Hoff has been a rock this year. Other than Mbakwe, he is our most important player and one of our most improved 4-year players. We will take a big hit when he leaves next year. Hopefully Austin or Chip will step up.

Congrats Blake. A GREAT four years here at Minnesota. To think he committed to a 9 win team just to be on a MUCH improved team over his career, he deserved it. One of the main reasons why we accomplished so much. I will miss watching him play. Cheers.

+1

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Just knowing we got a hometown kid to come to the program and help improve us this much (along with tubby of course) makes it that much sweeter. Going from a high school kid hitting an AMAZING shot and winning an ESPY, to hitting an AMAZING shot against Indiana as a Freshmen in the BTT to win the game, to being a four year senior leading the #16 team in the nation. Great stuff.

Playing PG for the first time in his college career

You know, this has been said a couple times now in the last few days.

Didn't Hoff end up playing point for several games last season or the season before? I swear I remember something.

Yeah, however it was just spot duty. He was never in full control and had Devno J as a secondary ball handler.

I'd have to say Hoff IS our most important player(MVP). Trevor may or may not be a 'better player' but we have a hell of a lot more depth on the front line. If Hoff were to go down we would be in BIG trouble.

Hoff has finally gotten above the label as a standstill set shooter this year w/ his development of a little mid-range game. We're really going to miss his bball smarts and leadership next year. Tough to replace. In related matter, my GH name will no longer be relevant....

People on here would still find ways to complain about a Gopher player even if he were POY.

Well said.

How is it that we dont have a capable pg or two in the wings?

For starters:

Cobbs transferred
Dewho couldn't find his binky
Corey went to Texas

Not excusing it, just trying to answer why.

Kinda in the Flip Saunders mold...he has shouldered his share of the leadership position on the team and deserves his kudos.

Next year everyone is going to miss that feeling of "I know this is going in" when Hoff is about to let one loose from distance. There haven't been many Gopher players in my lifetime that have warranted that feeling.

Blake has been great and worked very hard...type of blue collar player, that is very fitting for the Big 10

I am curious about his next step after this year, Is he going overseas? getting into coaching?

I'm pretty sure he's expressed interest in continuing his playing career, which would most likely have to occur overseas. I'm sure he could have a solid European career sitting on the perimeter...
