with "clean" records, the lights don't shine bright enough in Minny for several reasons:
1) they are too far along and too accomplished/secure in current jobs to undertake a high-stress rebuilding task with a revived winning tradition in arguably the toughest fb conference/division in the country;
(2) ever since Holtz, Minny has been viewed as a stepping-stone on a career journey and not a final destination...Mason just reinforced that view with his tOSU fantasies;
(3) the U has rarely hired a D1 fb coach with a winning D1 record thus demonstrating a lack of past institutional commitment to winning, developing a winning tradition or building a winning staff;
(4) for many, at a certain point (probably over $1-MM/yr) money does not become the major motivator and it becomes more about national prestige, ego gratification, institutional support, favorable press/media and lofty peer recognition on the big stage;
(5) many have no personal connection to the Upper MidWest and limited desire to make a long-term commitment to the land of 10K lakes and hockey central.
(6) they are leary of a cynical and mostly negative local media that seems to be subservient to a professional sports agenda with the Gophers taking the back seat in terms of coverage and suppport.
Given Kill's personal background of overcoming adversity and winning coaching record, this is the big opportunity and now is the time for him to create a 10-15 year run to the upper levels of his profession, preferably all done at Minnesota. Most of the pieces are in place, the only aspect he needs to renew successfully on an annual basis is BT-level recruiting.
If he becomes successful in the winning arena, the bandwagan effect in Minny will be huge.
