per these updates:

Miami (FL): One source close to the situation has just told us that Miami (FL) athletic director Kirby Hocutt wants to find out in the next day or two if Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen is interested in the position.

Miami (FL): AD Kirby Hocutt just said, "We're going to find the best coach in college football world. We're going to do whatever it takes to get back to the top of the college football world." Hocutt indicated he wasn't too pleased with Randy Shannon's reaction to his conversation with the head coach. Chuck Neinas has been hired to help with the coaching search. Hocutt has also stated that despite a previous report, none of the UM assistant have been let go.

Miami (FL): We were alerted on November 22nd that Miami (FL) was strongly leaning towards making a head coaching change. The source was good; but at that time the decision had not been made. The same source, who is close to the situation, now tells us that Miami (FL) is trying to setup an interview with Jon Gruden. There is talk also talk about UM being interested in Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables, Gary Patterson, and Georgia head coach Mark Richt. One thing is for sure, there won't be shortage of big names going after this position.

Go Gophers!!

This right here is why a Brady Hoke-type is what we will get (and I love Hoke as a coach and hope we hire him).

We all love Minnesota and think Minneapolis is a great spot, but the reality is that we are simply not going to compete with Miami for a coach. If Dan Mullen has a choice, he is not coming here- no matter who our AD is, whether we won the Iowa game, or whether we are willing to pay $2.5 million since Miami will pay more. Reality.

Is it still true that Miami only gets to have one head coach? They're not going to hire Mullen, Richt, Venables, Patterson AND Gruden, are they?

Someone better tell football scoop that Georgia is a top 15 job and Miami is not.

Kentucky is a better basketball job than Minnesota.

The reason why some feel Richt is in play is because there will be a tremendous amount of pressure on him next year to win at least 9 if not 10 games. Many coaches like to leave on their own terms and a guy like Richt may want a fresh 6-7 year guarantee with a bit less pressure than facing the possibility of getting fired next year and not leaving on one's own terms.

Go Gophers!!

From Tom Dienhart: According to CaneSport.com, Miami's top targets: Gruden; Richt; Patterson; Golden; Mullen; Edsall; M. Shula; D. Nolan; Trestman; Tuberville

Wow.

This exactly why MN will NEVER get a tier-A coach as long as J-Mat is running the show. Maturi doesn't even believe MN can be a winner. Ugh.

The difference between the two situations is huge. Richt to Minnesota would make that argument valid.
The problem with making it with Richt to Miami is that Miami has much fewer resources than Georgia, yet their administration has the same expectations as Georgia.

If Richt is looking for more assured money and lower expectations, Miami is not the place.

Good points. Richt has always been my "dream" candidate, but it doesn't look like it's in the cards.

The point, since you appear to have missed it, is that there will always be either a job at a helmet school or the possibility of a better job to focus on.

Let's say Mullen is hired by Miami. Do you think that Richt and Patterson are so desperate to leave their excellent, well-paying jobs that they will immediately jump at the Minnesota job? Do you think Gruden will ignore the NFL options he will have after this season to come here?

A guy is going to take the job for one of three reasons: the job is a step up in pay, a step up in the ability to compete at a high level, or a step up in job prestige. In all likelihood, the guy who takes the job will be able to check all of those boxes. I would love to be wrong on this, but I just don't see the guys listed above (with the possible exception of Mullen) being able to check enough of those boxes to come to Minnesota. Golden, Hoke, Sumlin, etc. would.

No, I got the point. I'm just saying you're wrong. There won't always be enough helmet schools for everybody. Right now there's Miami. If Patterson is ready to leave this year, he better get the Miami job.

I get the part about other schools being better opportunities, whether they're helmet schools or not. Colorado might be a better fit for some coaches than Minnesota. For other coaches, Minnesota might be better than Colorado. But to say that there will always be a job head and shoulders above Minnesota, so we can't compete for the best coaches, is just plain wrong.

Wow.

Maybe we better lock-up Trestman now?

Define "always". If you mean on a year-to-year basis, you are wrong. Name me one hiring season in the last decade where there wasn't at least one open job that is much better than Minnesota, and I will concede the point.

Donna Shulala Interested in Mullen? She hired Alvarez. Mullen did look good this year...but only two years as HC at Mississippi State.

This.

The job they currently have + the possibility of something better next year = not coming to MN. This is the reality for someone like Patterson/Petersen/Harbaugh/Richt. I hope it isn't for Mullen, but it could be.

No, I don't mean there won't be better jobs on a year-to-year basis -- of course there will. I'm saying that there aren't enough to go around each year. Right now, there's one "helmet school" job available -- Miami. Certainly, if Minnesota and Miami are after the same coach, Miami will get him. But once the Miami job is filled, we should be able to compete with the rest of the schools looking for a coach this year. Alabama isn't looking for a new coach this year. Neither is USC, Notre Dame, etc. (If Michigan fires Rodriguez, that changes things.)

So as of today, IF Richt, Patterson, Gruden, Bellotti, et al, are willing to consider looking for a new place to coach, only one gets to go to Miami. After that, they have to decide whether to come to a place like Minnesota or Colorado now or wait another year and hope that next year's one or two helmet schools pick them. Are we are willing to be persuasive enough to get their attention this year? I doubt it. But it's not because every job out there is better than ours. A lot of this is just a matter of timing.
