Never mind the decision Calathes made; let's take a look at what's occurred since Billy D. presided over the last two time national champ in college basketball and threatened to make Florida the team of the SEC, not Kentucky. It seems oh so long ago that Billy D was tapdancing first with Kentucky, then the Orlando Magic before coming back to Gainesville to try to recapture the magic with a highly regarded recruiting class. Lead by two McD's All Americans (Calathes and Jai Lucas) and two other top 100 recruits (Chandler Parsons and Alex Tyus). This past season, four top 100 talents (Kenny Kadji, Eloy Vargas, Allen Chaney, and Ray Shipman) were added to the Gators' roster. That's nine Top 100 talents added onto the roster in the last two seasons.
What's happened? If you recall the freshman year of Calathes' class, Donovan ripped apart his new recruits as they struggled through the season, on their way to the NIT. Lucas transferred to Texas after his freshman season, Tyus was planning on doing so after this season, but decided to stay, and Calathes, the most developed of the recruits, is now headed to Greece. Parsons has contributed both seasons, but has been pretty inconsistent. As for last season's freshman, the biggest contributor was Kadji at 4.4 ppg and 3 rpg. Chaney has already transferred to Va Tech.
Billy D steps into next season with a new McD's All American (Kenny Boynton), a former McD's AA transfer (Vernon Macklin, late of Georgetown), and another top 100 recruit (Erik Murphy). However, the loss of Calathes really looks big, especially when you consider that John Calipari's now coaching in Lexington, Mark Fox is leading Georgia, and Bruce Pearl is still at Tennessee. It must seem like a long time since Joakim Noah, Al Horford, Corey Brewer and the others roamed the Gainesville campus.
