Florida State head basketball coach Leonard Hamilton is getting sued by 6 former players for over $1.5M for missed NIL payments they say he promised😳

But I thought teams couldn’t offer NIL…only 3rd party collectives??? 🙄

according to the story, Hamilton allegedly told the players that the money would be coming from "his business associates."

from a legal perspective, the question - I assume - is whether that declaration is enough to constitute a binding verbal contract.

as the saying goes, don't promise more than you can deliver.

going off on a tangent here, but saw an article with Brett Bielema talking about Illinois football. He said their NIL budget is $5-million. Bielema's point was that Illinois is doing better than other teams that spend a lot more on NIL. (insert joke about Bielema clearly having enough money to eat 4 or 5 meals a day.....)

And so it starts with NIL verbal promises. There will be a lot of these lawsuits.

Didn't something like this happen at UNLV in football, which lead to a couple starters quitting after 3 games?
