Flip Saunders endowed two $250,000 men's basketball scholarships to his alma mater

What exactly does that mean, or what will it look like? When would those scholarships go into affect? This is definitely a good thing if I'm reading that article correctly.

i think it means he donated 500 000. as an endowment it would pay off at 4-5% annually (depending on the U's investments). At 5% that is 25 k annually to the program.

Good for Flip.

So this goes into the scholarship fund for the basketball team or will they be able to give that money to walk-ons or something?

As much as this is a great thing for the program and for Flip to do...I almost wish he would have made the donation to the practice facility fund so that could be kicked off.

I don't understand why he needed to donate so much money for scholarship purposes. I mean, $25 k per year? I'm told quite often here (esp. on the football board) that DI basketball and football players are practically slaves, so I don't understand why they need $25 k a year to finance quasi-servitude.

The NCAA determine the number of scholarships a team has. The university determines how they are paid for. Flip helped with the latter part.

What is there to understand? He is donating a lot of money for scholarships to his alma mater. I think it is a very generous gift and people should be happy that he is giving back to his school.

Dpod is referencing how everyone says that D1 athletes are treated like slaves despite how much their scholarships are worth.

Here's MV's take on it. This is awesome for the U and for the athletic Department's books.

This is big, since unlike other B1G universities (ahem Wisconsin), the U doesn't use a tuition waiver on its athletic scholarships. In layman's terms, this means that scholarships are an expense of the athletic department and something that needs to be covered using department revenue. Endowing a scholarship (or in this case, two) allows the university to use AD to pay for that expense using returns from the U's athletic endowment fund, which will pay for scholarships in perpetuity (forever). Little Joel has long held the dream of one day seeing every scholarship at the U paid for by endowment, though finding folks to donate 250K a piece to Maturi has proved rather difficult. Without knowing how many basketball scholarships are currently endowed, it's easier numbers wise (since men's hoops has only 13 scholarships per squad) to have a fully endowed (HURR) hoops scholarship program than, say, footbawwww or hockey. Anywho, hats off to Flip for helping out the program the best way he can (which includes not coaching the team).
